Fenton's River Road lives up to its name as flood water closed it Monday. Ballfields and driving range were underwater on Sunset Hills' West Watson Road.
"We got pretty lucky, it's just a typical spring flood," said Fenton City Administrator Mark Sartors as the rising waters of the Meramec River forced closure of the River Road (Larkin Williams Road) Monday. In Sunset Hills, flood waters caused the closure of Minnie Ha Ha Park, as well as West Watson Road where the ball fields and the Sunset Hills Driving Range were underwater. A couple of St. Louis County parks in Fenton also were closed Monday due to Meramec flooding, including George Winter Park and Unger Park, as well as Valley Park's Lower Buder Park. The rising water, caused by rainfall upstream in the Meramec basin was the culprit in the flooding, according to the National Weather Service, and although the road closures were a minor …

Fenton city officials agreed to close the bridge for a couple of hours Thanksgiving morning at the request of Sunset Hills, to accommodate a 5k race.
The years dragged in Fenton as businesses, residents and city officials endured the often-delayed demolition of the Old Gravois Road bridge and then the months and months it took to build the a span across the Meramec River between Olde Towne Fenton and Sunset Hills. It had been five years since the old bridge had been deemed unsafe by a St. Louis County inspection team. The new bridge opened in August, bringing an end to the community headache of detouring around the closed span. That's why it was startling to see a sign posted at the bridge this week that…

Dr. Craig Hollander aims to teach that cavity prevention is key in children.
There is indeed a tooth fairy. But, he doesn’t put money under little ones’ pillows when they lose a tooth—he’s in the business of keeping teeth healthy. Dr. Craig Hollander of Pediatric Dentistry in Sunset Hills has volunteered with “Give Kids a Smile” (GKAS) since the inaugural program in 2002. For the first eight years he performed restorative dentistry on children visiting the clinic. He now screens children age 4 or under for dental disease and educates their parents on cavity prevention while overseeing the Tiny Smiles area of the clinic. GKAS hosts free comprehensive dental clinics for underserved children every February and October. Over the past decade, GKAS has provided 10,000 local children with $4.2 million in services with …

You may know her name as Lindbergh's director of community relations, but how much do you know about her?
For the past two years, Beth Cross has written every press release issued by the Lindbergh School District. She’s been a face for the district at chamber of commerce meetings, school functions and community events. As community relations director, it is her job to keep the public informed about the district, but not many people know about her. Cross, who grew up in Sunset Hills and now lives in Affton, went to Lindbergh High and took an early interest in journalism as the editor of the school’s newspaper her senior year. “I have always loved writing,” Cross said. She attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA and majored in news-editorial journalism. Her first job out of college was at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, a daily paper in …
