Lindbergh Baseball Staying Cool in the Clutch

The Flyers are 6-1 in one-run games, and hope to make a run to a Class 4 state championship.

The target for the Lindbergh baseball team is clear this season, and that is to win the Class 4 state championship in Springfield, Mo. during the first weekend in June. After winning eight of their past nine games, the Flyers certainly look poised to remain a title contender deep into the 2011 baseball season. Lindbergh defeated Eureka on Thursday night, 6-5, to improve to 10-3. “We were tested right away this season, and that’s the way you want it to be. You want that adversity, and it helps give you a sense of how to set your lineup for later in the season,” Lindbergh coach Darin Scott said. Even more impressive is the Flyers’ 6-1 mark in the elite Suburban West Conference. In fact, if you talk with Scott, what happens during the …

Lindbergh Holds Off Mehlville For Fifth Straight Victory

In the second of a two-game series, Lindbergh wins at Mehlville, 6-5, for the sweep.

After a tough 5-4 win at home on Tuesday, Lindbergh traveled to Mehlville on Wednesday to conclude the home-and-home series. Despite a late rally, including clutch hitting from Mehlville (5-7) catcher Austin Kretzer, the Flyers hung on to win, 6-5. Lindbergh moves to 7-2, including a 4-0 mark in the Suburban West Conference. Mehlville is 0-4 in league play. Lindbergh took an early 4-1 lead following the second inning, and led 5-2 after three. Senior starting pitcher Jared Haenni threw four innings, allowing two runs and striking out five batters. Junior infielder Sean Murphy led the Lindbergh offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Senior infielder Will Bartholomew added two hits and drove in one run. Late in the game, Kretzer'…

Lindbergh Cannot Complete Rally Against Rival Vianney

Vianney and Lindbergh renew their intense rivalry on Friday night, and Vianney hangs on to win, 78-67.

Don’t try telling Vianney and Lindbergh that the District Tournament is still one month away. The rivals had another back-and-forth battle on Friday night as Vianney overcame a late Lindbergh run and held off the Flyers for a 78-67 win in front of a packed and energetic crowd at Lindbergh High School in what could be a preview of next month's district final. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, Lindbergh (5-5) cut the deficit to three at 67-64 with 1:15 to play. But Vianney (8-7) hit their free throws and the Flyers were called for a key charging foul with 57 seconds remaining and the Golden Griffins held on for a thrilling win over their rival. “What a great atmosphere,” said Vianney coach Kevin Walsh. “When we play …

Lindbergh Ready to Taste Basketball Success

After winning just six games the past two seasons, Lindbergh basketball head coach Jason Wolfard expects the Flyers to be much more competitive this season.

The good news? Lindbergh head coach Jason Wolfard returns 76.1 percent of his scoring and 77.7 percent of his rebounding from last year's team. The bad? The Flyers won just five games and averaged 39.4 points per game. But with four starters and 11 lettermen returning from a group that went 5-20 one year ago, Wolfard and the veteran Flyers are expecting much better results this season. "It's going to be different this year," Wolfard said. "I think we're kind of the unknown right now because of the way we were the last two years. You can call it a surprise or whatever you want, but I think we're going to be a lot better. We're going to compete with a lot more teams and I think our goal of competing for championships is very realistic. "We …

Despite Rough Finish, Lindbergh Football Solid Again in 2010

Head coach Tom Beauchamp took an inexperienced Flyers team back to the state playoffs, finishing the year 9-3.

After starting 10-0 and suffering an upset loss to Fox in the first round of the state playoffs last year for their first and only defeat of the season, many thought the losses the Lindbergh Flyers football team suffered to graduation would be too much for them to overcome in 2010. But that's not how Tom Beauchamp and the Lindbergh Flyers operate these days. Since making a trip to the State Championship game in 2003, Beauchamp and the Flyers have routinely been a force to be reckoned with in the tough Suburban West Conference. And things were no different this fall as Beauchamp took an inexperienced Flyers team back to the state playoffs, finishing the year 9-3 overall and tied for another Suburban West title with a 7-1 conference mark. …
