Student Reviewer: Northwest Production Brings Fairy Tale to Life

Northwest High School rises to the occasion in production of "Beauty and the Beast."

By Brigitta Davis of Pattonville High School "Beauty and the Beast," the childhood favorite of many, receives a grown-up adaptation in the stage musical. New songs, more dialogue, and alternate character portrayals intrigue a familiar audience with a more complete view of the fairytale made famous by the Disney animated movie. Northwest High School rises to the occasion when taking on these challenges to make memorable and unique stage presentation. To many, Disney is responsible for the revitalization of Broadway, drawing millions back to the stage with song hits and storylines made popular by high-grossing films. Cappies Review: Northwest High Production Is Precise, Funny

Student reviewer from Rockwood Summit says the ensemble and crew from "Any Number Can Die" did not disappoint in either thrilling the audience or making it laugh.

By Brian Ball Rockwood Summit High School As the curtain opened for the production of Any Number Can Die by Fred Carmichael at Northwest High School the mysteries started right from the start. At Raven’s Head mansion at precisely 12 o'clock, the will of the deceased Cedric Russell is to be read, but abnormal things occur and it turns into a murder scene. This two-hour, three-act show is sure to be a thrilling comedy. The entire ensemble was fit to be on the stage. The lines were precise, the comedy was displayed at just the right moment, and every actor knew their purpose. Despite the projection issue in the first act, the ensemble made adequate adjustments to the second and third act. The ensemble painted a clear picture of who each …

Cappies Review: 'Acts of God': Feel it Without Going Through it

Bishop DuBourg High school puts on a wonderful play, full of emotions, according to this student review by The Cappies, the student thespian and critical review program in the region.

By Tiffany Vonderahe of Northwest School District The terrible misfortunes that surround everyone, including earthquakes, hurricanes and tornados, are addressed in this play as “Acts of God.” The play starts with a window, a simple window with Maria, Gibbons, explaining the window. It ends with the lights dimming, and the sirens starting. Bishop DuBourg High school puts on a wonderful play, full of emotions. The world premiere of “Acts of God” was in 2006 at the Evansville Civic Center in Evansville, Indiana.  It was based off of actual events.  Bishop DuBourg, however, added the Joplin tornado to the story, and it fit right in.  They also changed the character “Fernando” from a girl to a boy.  These changes are perfectly acceptable. …

Is High School Theater Important? Local Student Critics Explain Why

Is theater important for students today? Was it important for you? Should it be stressed in high school? More than 120 students around the region learned about how to do theater criticism for the 29 shows they'll review this school year.

Everyone's a critic? Well, for 120 students from high schools throughout St. Louis and St. Charles counties, they're not officially critics until they've gotten their training from The Cappies, the national student theater critics program. Students from 15 area high schools converged on Rockwood Summit High School on Saturday for a morning of training in how to write reviews, the rules of The Cappies program and tips on theater etiquette. Patch tagged along to find out why some of the aspiring scribes think theater is important in their lives, their schools and the world.
