Proposition S: Special School District Pushes For Operating Tax Levy

The district has proposed a $.19 increase on the November ballot to fund technology upgrades, teacher salaries and building improvements.

For the first time in six years, the Special School District of St. Louis County, which provides staffing for 22 school districts in the area in addition to the district's own schools, will ask voters to approve a tax levy increase that on a $100,000 house would equate to roughly $36 annually. The increase, which at $0.19 would bring the overall tax levy to $1.19 per $100 assessed valuation, comes at a time when district superintendent John Cary said, for the first time in his more than 30 years in education, all sources of district revenue have gone down during the economic slowdown. Perhaps the Special school district should get a larger share of our current property taxes. Wage differences in Public schools vs Special school district is unwarranted. Let's get a new Prop that demands more sharing of current Real Estate tax. I am voting NO, because our current Real Estate Taxes should allocate More to the special school district.   more ›

Rockwood, Lindbergh Students Receive Special Awards, Scholarships

Thirty-nine students in all will be recognized at the annual Commitment to Kids banquet Thursday.

The Special Education Foundation, along with the Special School District (SSD), will recognize and honor 39 SSD students at the annual Commitment to Kids Banquet Thursday.  Students will be honored for their achievements in academics as well as their accomplishments in vocational training, community service, arts, independent living skills and communication skills.   Twenty-three students will receive the Rosemary Zander Award—the highest honor awarded to SSD students. The Zander Award program recognizes students for their extraordinary successes.  Also being recognized at the banquet will be the winners of numerous scholarships and camperships awarded by local organizations, including the Special Education Foundation and the Bonhomme …
