St. Louis County Police officers took kids shopping this holiday season to help them buy gifts for themselves and their families.
St. Louis County Police West County Precinct school resource officers chose 15 kids from the Parkway, Rockwood and Valley Park School districts to participate in holiday program to secure gifts. St. Louis County Police officers started Saturday, Dec. 16, with a breakfast for the kids at the Elks Lodge in Manchester. St. Louis County Police Department officers teamed up with the Elks Lodges from Manchester, Ellisville and St. Louis to help raise money so children from West St. Louis County could go shopping with an officer at an area store of their choice on Dec. 16. Police said the Elks raised $1,500 and gave 15 students a $100 gift card each to “Shop With a Cop” for personal Christmas Gifts. Kids purchased presents for their families …

Student volunteers will assist with New Orleans' Habitat for Humanity and New Orleans' Outreach projects this coming spring break. Due to budget cuts within Rockwood School District, the group now has to raise its own funds for the first time.
Walmart representatives presented a check for $5,000 on Tuesday to support a volunteer service trip scheduled for senior students from Lafayette, Marquette, Rockwood Summit and Eureka High Schools for March 15-22. The donation was presented to Timothy Jones, assistant principal of the 12th Grade at Lafayette High School, by Glenda Fleming Willis, regional general manager for Walmart. Jones said this is the seventh year in a row that students from Rockwood School District high schools will travel to New Orleans to perform service work. “The trip started in 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, and it is a wonderful way to teach students the importance of community service and helping others who are less fortunate.” Nearly 100 students, …

Dear Rockwood Parents: These last few days have been extremely difficult as we’ve learned more about the tragic incident in Connecticut. Flu shots to be dispensed before the onset of the main flu season.
The Jefferson County Health Department will dispense flu shots from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Jefferson County Library, Arnold Branch, 1701 Missouri State Rd. The flu shot clinic will be in the Arnold Jaycees Community Room. For residents of the Rockwood School District, flu shots will be available at several schools through Nov. 8. The cost of the flu shots in the Jefferson County program is $25. Residents are asked to bring a medicare card or health insurance card with them at the time of the shot. For the Rockwood schools' program, flu shots are $20 for Rockwood employees and their immediate families, or $28 for Rockwood students and community members. Students were recognized based on their scores on college entrance exams.
In the 2011-20112 Duke Talent Search, or Duke TIP, 139 seventh-grade students from Rockwood’s six middle schools achieved state or grand level recognition based on their scores on college entrance exams, according to a news release from the district. These students are among the more than 63,000 students nationwide who participated in the Duke TIP by taking the ACT or SAT alongside of high school students; and many earned scores that rival or surpass those achieved by older students. “We are proud of our students’ achievements in the Duke TIP," said Jim Wipke, Rockwood School District's executive director of secondary education. “Their scores are impressive and a reflection of their abilities, motivation and potential for success in …

Spotlight Productions gives Rockwood students a chance to perform and learn more about theater during the summer.
It's hard to find someone who hasn't heard of The Wizard of Oz, which is what makes it a hard show to put on. The director and cast have to find a way to tell a well-known story in a way that keeps the audience entertained. "This show is so iconic. As a director, I was hesitant to do this show because there isn't much creatively that can be done outside of what the audience expects," director Sherry Liliensiek-Gehrs said in an email.
