Trash Fire in Student Restroom Causes Brief Evacuation of Rockwood South Middle School

Students waited on buses outside until clearance was given by the Fenton Fire Protection District.

There was a bit of a diversion for students at Rockwood South Middle School Friday morning as a trash can fire caused a precautionary evacuation of the school at 1628 Hawkins Road, Fenton. According to an email letter sent to parents by principal Linda Miller, a staff member discovered a small fire about 9:15 a.m. in a trash can in a student bathroom. The fire was quickly extinguished, she said in the letter, adding "The school’s fire alarm sounded, and we immediately evacuated the building as the Fenton Fire Department responded to the alarm." Miller said students waited on school buses until fire safety officials provided clearance for them to return to class. She said student lunch periods were shifted to an earlier time so students …

Rockwood South PE Teacher is Missouri Coach of Year

This Rockwood School District teacher has dedicated her life to health and fitness.

Rockwood School District physical education teacher Kally Fischer must dream about finish lines, given that she has been running toward them for at least the past 20 years or more. Fischer recently was named the Missouri Class 4A Girls' Coach of the Year. For the last 12 years, she has taught physical education at Rockwood South Middle School and has coached at both Eureka High School and Rockwood Summit High School. Most recently, she served as an assistant track coach and head girls cross country coach at Eureka. This year was a good one for Fischer's Eureka girls cross country team, whose members achieved a second place finish at the Missouri State Championship. Rockwood Middle Schoolers to Bowl

Rockwood School District middle school students can sign up for a bowling tournament this month.

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade Rockwood School District students are invited to participate in the annual Middle School Bowling tournaments to be held this month at West County Lanes in Ellisville. Cost is $3 per student per tournament. Both tournaments will take place from 3–4:30 p.m. Cosmic bowling tournament dates: Competitive bowling tournament dates: Spaces for both tournaments are limited, so early registration is encouraged. Rockwood middle school physical education teachers have the tournament registration forms, and can address questions.

Who Watches Out For High Schoolers in Need?

A Fenton mom and Fox School District social worker discovered a way to keep needy kids in warm clothes while helping her friends clean out their own closets.

Sometimes teachers will notice a student who never seems to change his clothes or is still wearing flip flops in the winter. Sometimes kids are just struggling in another area of their life and a councilor will send them to see Gayle Beck, the Fox District social worker. And Beck is there to help however she can. Beck’s main job as the district’s only social worker is to help families and homeless students who have needs stretching beyond academic issues. She doesn’t have a budget to directly aid families, only a list of resources in Arnold and Jefferson County where she can send families for assistance. But a lot of time she helps students out of her own pocket. In her office she has a box of soup and inexpensive food she can send back …

Rockwood 7th Graders Enjoy Early Release Day Fun

Rockwood's Drug-Free Coalition group hosted 420 students at Sports Fusion and RiverChase

Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition hosted three afternoons of fun and safe activities for 420 7th grade students last week from all six Rockwood middle schools.  Students from Crestview, LaSalle Springs, Rockwood South, Rockwood Valley, Selvidge and Wildwood middle schools enjoyed food, fun and games at Sports Fusion in Chesterfield and at RiverChase in Fenton.  Students from Eureka, Lafayette, Marquette and Rockwood Summit High Schools were partnered with the 7th graders.  Activities included laser tag, dodge ball, kick ball, basketball, rock climbing, volleyball, swimming, miniature golf, an inflatable obstacle course, indoor slides and board games. “Early release days can be high risk periods for middle school youth if parents are at work or …

Parent, Student Orientation Set Thursday at Rockwood Middle

Teachers will be available to explain expectations for the new school year.

The Rockwood School District has set up an open house and orientation for 6th Grade students and their families at Rockwood South Middle School from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the school at 1628 Hawkins Road, Fenton. During the event, students will have their pictures taken, pick up their schedules and be able to meet some new friends. To help students transition to their new school, 6th Grade teachers will meet with families, explain class expectations and share tips on how to succeed in middle school.

Gary Ujka Has a Library He Can Call His Own

The Rockwood Middle School Library now will be the Gary Ujka Library Media Center.

Rockwood South Middle School staff members, adminstrators, family and friends gathered ta the school Tuesday to dedicate its library to its long-serving assistant principal Gary Ujka, who is retiring from education after 32 years, 31 of them at Rockwood South. The school library now will be known as the Gary Ujka Library Media Center. Rockwood South Principal Linda Miller praised Ujka at Tuesday's ceremony, noting his dedication to students, teachers and school issues and remarking that he is "a show-up kind of guy." Considering the amount of time Ujka spent in the school cafeteria supervising students, several people joked that naming the cafeteria after Ujka would have been more appropriate. The Silent Treatment for an Anti-Bullying Message

Rockwood South Middle School students participate movement to raise awareness about bullying.

Rockwood South Middle School, 1628 Hawkins Rd., Fenton, students participated in a national movement Friday to raise awareness about bullying. Students wore signs to signify their participation and to challenge others to stand up for those who are bullied. At 11 a.m. the students stood in front of school and observed five minutes of silence, joining other students in the Rockwood School District.

Jeff Sass is Rockwood South Teacher of the Year

Sass will be recognized with other honorees on May 6.

In the Rockwood School District, each school selects its own teacher of the year who then completes the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) application for the district level program. Each school's Teacher of the Year will be recognized during the ROSE award ceremony in the Rockwood District on May 6. At that time, the elementary, middle and high school teachers of the year also will be announced. The announcements wilol be followed by the announcement of the Rockwood Teacher of the Year. Rockwood South Student Knows His Geography

Tyler Peterson wins the Rockwood South Middle School geography Bee and moves on to compete on the state level in May.

Eighth-grade student Tyler Peterson, of Fenton, has qualified to participate in the state level of the National Geographic Bee, which is sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.  Tyler earned this opportunity after winning the Rockwood South Middle School Geography Bee and successfully completing the qualifying exam.  Rockwood South Middle School teacher Jim Tegethoff has organized the school’s Geographic Bee for 18 years.  “While some students are nervous to compete, the Bee is a great way for students to demonstrate their knowledge, and it provides them a chance to excel,” said Tegethoff, in a news release from the Rockwood School District.  “More than 1,000 students participate in our school Bee each year.” History teacher Ed Washington …
