Not Again! Old Gravois Road Bridge To Be Closed - For One Morning Only

Fenton city officials agreed to close the bridge for a couple of hours Thanksgiving morning at the request of Sunset Hills, to accommodate a 5k race.

The years dragged in Fenton as businesses, residents and city officials endured the often-delayed demolition of the Old Gravois Road bridge and then the months and months it took to build the a span across the Meramec River between Olde Towne Fenton and Sunset Hills. The waiting game came to and end last summer as the new Old Gravois Road bridge opened and then was dedicated a week later at a festive city-wide celebration of Fenton's 175th birthday. It had been five years since the old bridge had been deemed unsafe by a St. Louis County inspection team. The new bridge opened in August, bringing an end to the community headache of detouring around the closed span. That's why it was startling to see a sign posted at the bridge this week that…

What Should We Call the New Fenton Bridge?

Such a long awaited structure in town deserves a fitting monicker. We'd like to hear your ideas for naming the Meramec River bridge nearing completion in Fenton.

Today, we have a bridge to sell you (on). The long-awaited bridge over the Meramec River between Olde Towne Fenton and Sunset Hills received a major step forward this week as the concrete bridge deck was poured. The bridge was closed in August 2007 after a St. Louis County inspection found extensive deterioration to the bridge deck and support system. The demolition of the old bridge and construction of a new span has been delayed multiple times by Mother Nature, mostly due to historically high river levels as the river wandered into low-lying areas and prevented the construction of bridge supports. Now that the goal is to have the bridge completed by late August or early September, it got us at Patch to wondering. What will the new bridge…

Bob, I used the old bridge in the 50s. I moved into Fenton 28 years ago. I think the the bridge should be called Old Thirty Bridge, Old 30 Bridge would work as well. It may not be an old bridge but High Way 30 sure is an old road with a great history. I remember Fenton Produce and the old building Metro Electric is in now. It is a neat old area that can be somthing again but the smell in the area…   more ›

Concrete Progress on the Old Gravois Road Bridge

Workers were expected to finish pouring cement Monday to build the roadway of the new bridge.

Concrete progress was made today on the long-delayed Old Gravois Road Bridge linking Sunset Hills and Olde Towne Fenton. Workers from Pace Construction started early Monday morning pumping tons of cement into place to make the roadway of the new bridge. Using concrete pumps, about 60 trucks full of cement were used to construct the roadway. Poor weather and river flooding have been the culprit in the bridge delays, frustrating the many business owners in Olde Towne and elsewhere. The old bridge was closed in August 2007 after a St. Louis County inspection found extensive deterioration to the bridge deck and support system. Demolition of the bridge took several months as unusually high river levels kept workers from tearing the span down. …

Old Towne Fenton Finds Champions at the Market

Christine Manes of The Green House Market wants to see Old Towne Fenton flourish again.

Christine Manes and her family run The Green House Market, a business that’s currently in a state of flux. For two years the shop has sold a variety of organic, natural or locally produced goods at the corner of Mound Street and Gravois Road in Olde Towne Fenton. But this winter Manes felt the need to shutter her brick and mortar shop and turned to the internet to sell her goods. “There’s been a steady flow of business,” Manes said. Her regular customers still call in orders for delivery and she said they’re doing well with the sale of custom gift baskets. Part of the reason for closing the Market were family related and part was the building itself. Manes said the old building needs repairs and she’s been negotiating with the landlord to …

I feel like you do, Fenton is one large parking lot after another, no benchs to sit in as you walk, in fact not even a side walk. No beauitufl areas to enjoy downtown, the parks are wonderful, but the rest is far from being charming. At Gravious Buffs, there not even a walk light to cross the 141, to enjoy the other stores, 37 thousand trees were remove to build these masive retail complexs, At …   more ›

Meramec River Bridge Now Under Fenton's Jurisdiction

Boundary adjustment means bridge formerly owned by St. Louis County will be completely maintained by Fenton

Progress on the Gravois Road bridge continues but when it is completed in 2012 it will belong solely to the City of Fenton. The Fenton Board of Aldermen approved a boundary adjustment agreement with St. Louis County Oct. 28 that gives Fenton complete control over the replacement bridge once it is complete. Previous to the bridge's closing and removal, St. Louis County controlled all but the first 10 feet of the bridge's approach lanes on the Fenton side. Since the Meramec River levels have dropped work on the bridge supports and approaches continues, but due to the impending winter weather it is expected that the bridge decks will be poured sometime in March, 2012. According to the boundary adjustment, the city desires the change to “…

This bridge will probably be completed in 2014 due to the ineptness and severly slow construction of the contractors. How can it take over four years to build a short two lane bridge? The Old 141 bridge replacement is a total joke. Still not anywhere close to completion after over six months. A small crew of 3-4 workers worked on this project most days during the entire summer. This city should …   more ›

First it Was Water, Now the Wind Slows Bridge Construction

Workers make progress on the Old Gravois Road bridge before the winds picked up

Workers placing the steel girders in place on the Old Gravois Road bridge were making good progress this week until the winds picked up today, making the placement of the steel too precarious for those responsible for finishing the deck on the new span. The long-delayed Old Gravois Road bridge between Fenton and Sunset Hills saw a spurt of progress this week as massive steel support beams were swung into place. The bridge has been beset by delays, mostly caused by the high river levels on the Meramec River. Now Mother Nature is throwing bridge builders another curve as the winds have picked up, making the positioning of the girders a more precarious process. After the water finally dropped low enough two weeks ago to finish building the …

Sad Support for a Long-Delayed Bridge

The Meramec River has wreaked havoc with the construction of a new Old Gravois Road bridge in Fenton.

The up and down levels (mostly up) of the Meramec River this year and last has caused delay after delay in the completion of the new Old Gravois Road Bridge in Fenton. The "Frustration Bridge" is still on hold as the Meramec was rising this week, cresting at 23.3 feet Thursday, and expected to drop to 19 feet by next Friday.  And that's only if no more rain falls here or in the watershed that feeds into the Meramec. The bad news is that's still six feet too high for workers to reinstall the flood-damaged bridge support before being freed from the vagaries of the river levels. If the river dropped to 13 feet today, the work on the supports and roadway would not be finished until next summer, Sartors said. "Everybody is frustrated with it …

Yes thanks for the update. I agree with Alice's comment about the old 141 bridge. We can't wait for it to be fixed.   more ›
