Northwest Grad Joins the Guard and Doesn't Look Back

A High Ridge woman follows in her father's boot steps to serve her country--and have her college paid for, too.

Tess Kliethermes, a recent Northwest High grad, wants to go to college. But she didnt' want to carry a heavy student debt. “Debts and loans were not something I wanted to get into at all,” said the 18-year-old. So as a junior, Kliethermes sought out a fellow student who had enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard and asked him about the experience.  “After that I spoke to a recruiter about the Guard’s college tuition benefits and ended up enlisting in November 2011,” she said.  Kliethermes’ decision to join the military was applauded by her father, David Kliethermes, an Army veteran. Sukja Kliethermes, her mother, was not so keen on the idea. “My mom didn’t want me to mess with the military at all,” Kliethermes said. “She wanted me to…

Peter Emerson Sees a Dream Come True as Missouri Guardsman

Emerson fulfills a lifelong ambition to become, at age 30, a member of the Army Guard.

By Bill Phelan Public Affairs Representative Missouri Army National Guard As a child, Peter L. Emerson, 31, of Maryland Heights, had dreamed of being a soldier and wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army. But unlike many childhood ambitions that fade with adulthood, Emerson’s dream became a reality last year when, at the age of 30, he enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard.   “I regretted not joining the military when I was younger, but then found out I still had the opportunity to do it, even as far as I was with my civilian career,” Emerson said. “Because I had spoken to recruiters before my family wasn’t entirely surprised but I think they thought I was sort of out of the woods as far as military service.” Emerson’s initiation into …

Missouri Guard Soldiers Drill as Families Look On

Family members watch as soldiers complete grueling obstacle course.

By Bill Phelan Missouri National Guard Patty Warmbrodt, of Fenton, grimaced as she watched her son, Pvt. Matt Warmbrodt, work his way through an obstacle course Saturday at the Festus National Guard Armory.  “This isn’t the path I would have chosen for Matt,” she said. “It looks really hard. But we need people to protect our country and I’m proud of him for that.”  Warmbrodt was one of several hundred moms, dads, sisters, brothers and girlfriends to attend Family Day at the Festus armory, an annual event that gives families and friends of National Guard soldiers a chance to watch their loved ones go through drill. Amid shouts of encouragement, about 60 G Company soldiers of the Guard’s Recruit Sustainment Program completed an obstacle …

Family and Friends Welcome Home the 1138th from Afghanistan

All 165 soldiers from the Missouri National Guard’s 1138th Transportation Company, based in Jefferson Barracks, were given a hero's welcome in Manchester Saturday.

Hundreds of family and friends—many holding signs and balloons—waited anxiously for the return of their solders from Afghanistan Saturday afternoon at the First Evangelical Free Church. The Missouri National Guard unit had arrived at Lambert Airport around 11 a.m. Saturday morning and was then bused to the church, where they waited out of sight in another room. The crowd burst into applause when the soldiers filed in and took their seats. The 1138th Transportation Company is based out of Jefferson Barracks. They’ve spent the last year working out of Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan, where they ran more than 90 convoy missions to deliver supplies to operating bases. High Ridge Man and Guard Veteran Helps Other Vets With Retiree Benefits

Retired Guardsman provides information to Guard retirees through the Missouri National Guard Retiree Council.

By Bill Phelan Although he retired from the Missouri Army National Guard in 1993, Dave Riley is still very much involved with the organization where he spent 26 years in uniform.   Now a member of the Missouri National Guard Retiree Council, Riley, 67, of High Ridge, helps other Guard retirees and their spouses take full advantage of veteran’s benefits they may not even know they are entitled to.   “If there’s a Guard retiree out there who doesn’t know what benefits they have coming we can guide them to the right people and get them taken care of in a couple of hours,” Riley said. “It makes me feel good to help them.”   While some retired Guardsmen keep close track of their benefits, many fail to pass that information along to their spouse…
