Summit Blasts Fox to Advance to District Title Game

Falcons welcome back Beisel; get 108 rushing yards from McIntosh in a 34-0 victory

FENTON – The return of their best player gave the Falcons the spark they needed. The Rockwood Summit football team welcomed Eric Beisel back on the field Wednesday night after the University of Missouri recruit was out for two months with a broken foot. The 6-foot-4, 238-pound linebacker led a dominant defensive outing as the Falcons advanced to the MSHSAA Class 5 District 1 championship game with a 34-0 rout of Fox. “It was a big lift for the kids, the coaches and the school,” Summit coach Mike Bellers said of Beisel’s return. “He’s probably the finest football athlete to come out of Rockwood Summit. To do without him for two months was something we had to endure, but we’re just happy he’s back.” Without Beisel, the Falcons dropped their …

High School Football: Parkway North Unable To Rise Up To Summit

Vikings unable to rally back, after falling behind No. 7 Summit 21-0 in the first quarter.

After losing the Missouri Class 4 state baseball championship game in heart-breaking fashion last spring to Suburban South Conference rival Rockwood Summit, the Parkway North football team had plans on returning the favor when the Vikings and Falcons met in Week 3 of the football season. Many prominent figures from the baseball teams for both schools also put on the helmets and pads in the fall. But Summit put any thoughts of Parkway North revenge to bed early Saturday, by scoring on each of its first three possessions, then adding a fourth score on the final play of the first half, to build a 28-point lead that eventually became a 34-14 victory for the Falcons over the Vikings. The anticipated matchup was forced into Saturday when severe …

Rockwood Summit Football Warms Up with Preseason Scrimmage

The Rockwood Summit High School football team traveled to Oakville Friday night for a preseason scrimmage against the Tigers, Vianney and Hazelwood East.

The preseason scrimmage at Oakville was a “wake-up call,” for head coach Mike Bellers and his Rockwood Summit football team.  “It’s what you would expect in a scrimmage; it was sloppy and I think that we probably came over here a little bit too relaxed,” he said.  See more photos from the scrimmage on our Facebook page.  The Falcons played Oakville, Hazelwood East and Vianney and each team got 12 plays on offense and defense in the scrimmage. The coach said in addition to being more physical, the team needed to tighten up its snaps and line up correctly. “But there’s promise,” he said. “I think we came out of it and got better as the night went on but I’m certainly glad that we had that experience so we can work a little harder and be a …

Alumni Falcons Clinch Game with Varsity

Missouri senior Rolandis Woodland was on the alumni team, and future Tiger Eric Beisel played for the Summit varsity.

Rockwood Summit head coach Mike Bellers said the point of "Falcon Family Night" is to get everybody on the same page before the season starts. The highlight of the night is the varsity/alumni game. It's a 30-minute, half-field game of touch. He said bringing the alumni back for the game builds tradition. "We have kids that are successful kids. It doesn't matter how many games they won when they were here. We can hold them as roll models for the younger kids." He said it's the sixth or seventh year for the event. He said he had about 15 alumni, now there will probably be 80 there tonight. "They should whip our butt," Bellers said of the alumni team. At the end, Bellers said said the Falcons won, that it really didn't matter which side won. …

Rockwood Summit Football: “This is it!”

The Falcon football team, led by 11 experienced seniors, is eyeing a state run this season.

Rockwood Summit football’s Alex Armstrong describes last year's season-ending loss to Webster Groves as a horror movie. “It’s like a movie where the one team has the last-second drive to win the game and they don’t win. It’s the most painful feeling, you don’t sleep, you don’t want to go to school. The only thing to get rid of that feeling is to go out and work,” he said. The Falcons ended the 2011 season on a last-second two-point conversion to tie the game. They were stopped with less than a yard to go. “It makes every bit of effort, every last push, every step you take that much more. You don’t want to be at the chance to go to the state playoffs and be stopped by a yard,” Armstrong said. (See more photos from a recent Falcons practice …

Summit Football Continues To Improve Despite Loss To Webster

The Rockwood Summit Falcons remained strong throughout their battle with Webster Groves.

The Rockwood Summit football team is determined to earn respect. “Webster Groves has a fine collection of athletes. But, our kids play hard and are coached very well. I thought we always had a shot (against Webster Groves). Coming into this game, we were pretty optimistic,” Summit coach Mike Bellers said after the Falcons’ 31-14 loss on Friday night. Webster (4-0) and Summit (3-2) have scored 143 and 114 points, respectively, so far this season. Both teams held its opponents to 25 points or less in each of their three games. Webster was coming off a bye week, so it had had two weeks to prepare and rest. For Summit, it was a regular work week in practice. The visitors from Webster scored on its first two possessions of the game, and scored …

Summit Bounces Back, Pummels Parkway North For Impressive Victory

Rockwood Summit recovers from a poor showing last week to defeat Parkway North, 38-20, in a Suburban South Conference matchup.

What a difference one week makes. Our maybe it was a tough week of practice in scorching temperatures. Either way, Rockwood Summit showed a vast improvement from a blowout loss in Week 1 to earn a 38-20 home-opening victory on Friday against visiting Parkway North in a Suburban South Conference game. “Certainly there were a few times the kids couldn’t wait to play again because it was a rough week of practice,” Summit coach Mike Bellers said. “And with the heat, our kids really battled through. “I think we handled the heat better than they did; we were in it every day this weekend except (Thursday). Our kids paid the price, but they got the reward they deserved.” The heat, which pushed past 100 degrees for the third straight day on Friday…

Summit Drops Opener to Kirkwood with Five Turnovers

Pioneers run roughshod over Falcons in 36-7 win, as Summit defense allows 281 yards rushing.

Rockwood Summit turned the ball over five times on offense while the Falcon defense allowed 281 yards rushing to Kirkwood in a 36-7 loss in its season opener Friday. “We actually return quite a few guys on defense, so I’m really surprised our defense didn’t play better,” Summit coach Mike Bellers said. “The turnovers didn’t help; we put them in some bad situations.” Summit junior Ian McIntosh was stymied throughout the contest. He scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter but had 21 yards on 10 carries. Falcon senior receiver Joey Schenk caught eight balls for 99 yards from senior Tyler Karst, who had 132 yards passing despite a swarming Kirkwood defense that allowed little time to anyone with the ball. “A lot of times they were on us …

2011 Prep Football Preview: Rockwood Summit Falcons

Winning 2010 season has Summit fired up for 2011 campaign.

After breaking a string of three straight losing seasons with a solid 6-5 district championship run and state playoff berth in 2010, the Rockwood Summit High football team is looking to achieve bigger and better things in 2011. Coach Mike Bellers has eight starters returning on offense at Summit this season. Bellers also has one of the area’s best defensive players back to lead his defense, which led to one of Falcon football’s most upbeat and energetic offseasons ever. “It was probably one of the better offseasons we’ve ever had around here,” Bellers said. “All our camps, all our offseason training and conditioning programs were all very well attended. We’re very fortunate that about 85 percent of our kids here play other sports. So they’…

Summit Prepares For Football Season at Jamboree

Oakville Senior High hosts this multi-team preseason event under its Friday night lights.

As the sun began to set Friday evening, the familiar sound of buzzing stadium lights and high school football filled the air at Oakville High School. For some schools, the jamborees are an opportunity to polish out the dull spots in offense or defense with a week to go before the 2011 season starts. For other schools, the jamborees are about implementing new coaching styles as first-year coaches look to make their mark in the record books. Rockwood Summit head coach Mike Bellers is looking for his Falcons to improve on last season’s 6-5 record, which put Summit into the playoffs. “It’s really a practice opportunity that you get against other schools, and I thought that we came out and did everything that we wanted to,” Bellers said. "We …
