Rockwood Summit Boys Finish Second in Lindbergh Basketball Tournament

Summit posts a victory over its Lindbergh hosts and a last-minute win over Springfield Hillcrest, before succumbing in the championship game to O'Fallon.

The Rockwood Summit boys basketball team hoped to ride the emotion and momentum of a last-second win in the semifinals of the Lindbergh Tournament to a tourney title. It was not meant to be as the Falcons lost in the championship game to O'Fallon 58-52. The tournament was still an encouraging one for the Falcons who defeated the host Flyers in the first round 57-37 and then had a memorable win over Springfield Hillcrest 44-43 in the semifinals. Jory Woodson hit a shot at the buzzer in the semifinals and had an outstanding tournament overall. Woodson had 21 points in the opener, 13 in the semifinals and 19 in the championship game. Lindbergh came back after the opening round loss to defeat Jackson twice and capture the consolation …

Notebook: Winter Sports Season Concludes

Lindbergh wrestling sees major postseason success, and Summit and Northwest basketball earn basketball honors.

Sometimes a team’s record only tells part of the story. And while Lindbergh High School’s wrestling team finished the year with a 4-4 record in dual meets, coach Josh Hansel calls the season a success. “I don’t think our record indicates how strong we were,” Hansel said. “We had our ups and downs in dual meets. Our coaching staff tends to view our duals as a chance for the kids to wrestle matches. We don’t put kids in duals that are sick or injured, but we take our tournaments very seriously.” Lindbergh placed 10th in the 24-team Lee Summit Tournament, second in the 12-team Flyer Classic at Lindbergh High School, and first in the Howell North Tournament this season. “Tournaments are a big deal for us,” Hansel said. “The kids get to wrestle…

Mike Slyman Keeps State Championship All in the Family

Lindbergh's Michael Slyman grabs his first state championship as Nick Tufts ,of Northwest, falls one match short.

Michael Slyman, a Lindbergh High School junior, achieved his season-long goal at the state championship wrestling tournament at the Mizzou Arena Saturday when he not only won the state championship, but one-upped his dad. “This was the goal all along,” Slyman said. “We set that goal at the beginning of the year, and he stayed on track.” Slyman defeated Timberland’s Jesse Freise 2-0 in the 152-pound bracket to win the state championship as a junior. His father, Mike Slyman, who is Lindbergh's athletic director and a legendary wrestler at the school in the 1970s, was a second place finisher in his junior year. Mike Slyman has been coaching his son since he was five years old. Back then, they were wrestling in the basement. Saturday night, …

Northwest, Summit, Lindbergh Wrestlers Advance at State

Some local teams fare well in the wrestling tournament as others make early exits.

COLUMBIA, MO -- Wrestling fans from across the state speckled the typically gold-filled seats of Mizzou Arena all day on Thursday for the 81st Missouri State Wrestling Championships. It took eight simultaneous matches at a time, but all four different classes completed their first round matches and also their consolation (wrestleback) rounds. “There are a lot of logistics that go into it,” said Jason West, Communications Director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association. “We have over 1,600 matches over the next three days. There are four classes. There’s a lot of planning.” Midway through the first day of competition, West said he felt like everything was running smoothly. “The good thing is that this particular …

Lindbergh, Northwest Wrestlers Ready for State

The 81st MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships are Feb. 17-19 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

Lindbergh and Northwest are each looking forward to seeing how its many state-qualifying wrestlers will perform on the big stage. The Missouri state wrestling tournament is under way, as qualification matches were completed at district tournaments across the St. Louis region last weekend. The Lions and Flyers each enjoyed a strong district tournament at Northwest High School. Lindbergh's Michael Slyman placed first at 152 pounds, and four additional Flyers advanced to state. Lindbergh finished sixth overall at districts. Junior Slyman, who has a 32-1 mark at 152 pounds this season, represents Lindbergh's best chance at a state title. But four other Flyers will also make the trip to the state finals. Junior Matthew Ratterree (112), …

Lindbergh Enjoys Senior Night With Dominant Victory

Lindbergh wrestling defeats Mehlville, 60-12, as it takes advantage of several forfeits on Senior Night at Lindbergh High School.

Lindbergh wrestling coach Josh Hansel knew his team needed just one win on Wednesday night to beat Mehlville in its duel on Senior Night at Lindbergh High School. Just 32 seconds into the first round, they got it. With Mehlville having to forfeit five matches because they didn’t have wrestlers to fill each weight class, all Lindbergh needed to do was win one match to clinch the duel win. That happened just 32 seconds into the first round of the first match, when Lindbergh’s Tom Korenak pinned the Panthers’ Jarrath Foster in the 125-pound match. “That was probably the quickest we’ve won a duel,” Hansel joked. “We were just trying to get better in a lot of positions and I thought we did a pretty good job tonight. A lot of chain wrestling …

Junior Wrestler Chases Father's Records

Lindbergh junior wrestler Michael Slyman is hoping to surpass the impressive records of his father, Mike, who is a former Lindbergh state champion wrestler.

After losing his first match of the season two weeks ago in overtime during a tournament in Lee Summit, Lindbergh High School junior wrestler Michael Slyman used the long car ride back to St. Louis to tell his dad he had all the motivation he needed for the stretch run. His main goal? To beat dad, of course. Also named Mike, Slyman’s father is a former state champion wrestler from Lindbergh, where he now serves as the Flyers' athletic director. The elder Slyman dominated the high school wrestling scene in the 1970s, just as his son is doing now. He took second place in his junior year, and won the state championship his senior season after going 27-3-1. Now he’s a proud parent, watching as his son attempts to join him on the banners …

Lindbergh Uses Depth to Overcome Sickness, Dominates Fox

With three of its top wrestlers sick, Lindbergh used three JV wrestlers to win at Fox, 55-15.

With three of his top wrestlers sick and unavailable Wednesday night against Fox, Lindbergh coach Josh Hansel inserted a trio of JV wrestlers into his lineup that hadn’t seen any varsity action all year. Those in the stands who weren’t aware of the changes would have had no idea. All three JV wrestlers made the most of their varsity debuts, pinning their opponents to help Lindbergh defeat Fox 55-15 in a lopsided duel at Fox High School. “I thought we looked pretty good,” Hansel said. “Three guys that haven’t been in the lineup the entire year and all three of them won. We looked pretty good doing it. That’s good. It shows that our JV has been working hard and I can take guys out of the lineup and plug them in ours and expect wins and it …

Wrestling Preview: Summit, Northwest Gear up For Big Tourney

The inaugural St. Louis Suburban Conference Wrestling Tournament could serve as a showcase event for Rockwood Summit.

The inaugural St. Louis Suburban Conference Wrestling Tournament begins on Friday night and Rockwood Summit is certainly expecting this to be a showcase event for their many talented and top-ranked wrestlers. In fact, the tourney could serve as a preview of the Missouri state championships in mid-February. The 28-team tournament is on Friday, Jan. 7 and Saturday, Jan. 8 at Hazelwood Central High. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the final matches at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Eureka Wrestling Finishes With Flurry to Beat Lindbergh

Lindbergh loses to Eureka after it drops five straight pins to finish the match in a 47-23 loss at Eureka High School on Wednesday night.

Getting into an early hole is nothing new for Eureka wrestling coach Tim Yancey. With a lineup that features most of his experienced and talented wrestlers in the upper weight classes, Yancey has already seen his Eureka squad fall behind several times only to come back for resoundingvictories. So with his team down 23-11 to Lindbergh after eight matches Wednesday night at Eureka High School, Yancey sat back and let his big boys go to work. And right on cue, Eureka rolled off five straight pins to finish the match for a dominating 47-23 win. "We knew in our upper weights, that's where we have most of our experience," Yancey said. "Our upper weights usually come through for us in the duels. Usually from around 152 to heavyweight, we're …
