Eight Missouri teams will be in the day-long event at Scottrade Center Thursday.
The Coaches vs Cancer Shootout, a benefit for the St. Louis chapter of the American Cancer Association is a lot more than just a hoop fest. This is basketball for a real cause. While the players get to battle in front of large crowds in a major league arena (Scottrade Center), precious dollars are being raised for the effort to wipe out Cancer in our lifetime. Nothing could be better than that. Matt Hixenbaugh, MICDS’ coach of a team invited back for the third consecutive year puts it this way. “To be involved in this Shootout is a great honor. It is a wonderful opportunity to use basketball to make a positive impact on the outside world. In doing this, it is a great opportunity for our guys to be involved in a wonderful endeavor and …

The Flyers maintained a 7-7 tie well into the 4th quarter, but fell with just a few minutes left in the game.
The score was supposed to be much more lopsided. They weren’t supposed to have the ball with two minutes left and a chance to win the game. But that’s where the Lindbergh Flyers found themselves Friday night in their district opener at Parkway South thanks to an impressive defensive effort that kept the underdogs in the game from start to finish. So when his offense couldn’t put together a game-winning drive and they suffered a heart-breaking 10-7 loss to end their season, Lindbergh coach Tom Beauchamp couldn’t find a negative thing to say. “The kids came to play, they played their hearts out and gave it everything they had,” Beauchamp said. “I have no complaints or gripes. Our kids played with everything they had. “They have a lot of …

Flyers fall to 3-6, after 14-2 loss, in final home game for seniors.
Like often happens in sports, a close and controversial call that went against the Lindbergh High football team Friday night, might have made the difference, as the Flyers played their final home game of the season at Flyers Field on the Lindbergh campus. Wide receiver-turned quarterback Chuck Houska hit tight end Brad MacKeen for a sprint out pass that looked like a touchdown that would’ve pulled Lindbergh to within seven points early in the fourth quarter. Instead though, the officials ruled that MacKeen didn’t break the plane of the goalline on the 4th-and-goal play, and in fact, did not score, which gave the ball back to visiting Mehlville, which held on for a 14-2 win over the Flyers. “It’s really tough when a call like that goes …

The Panther defense overpowered the Flyers in a 14-2 win.
Despite high energy from Lindbergh High School's fan base, Mehlville defeated the Flyers 14-2 Friday night. Check out our fan and player gallery on the Sunset Hills-Crestwood Facebook page. The Flyers fell to 3-6 on the year, while the Panthers improved to 2-7, after securing their first victory since romping over Northwest back on opening night in August. Junior kicker Austin Massey connected on two clutch field goals in the early going to get the Panthers on the board, while fellow junior Brendan Morrow added a sensational 43-yard touchdown run to give Mehlville the cushion it needed, as it put the game away in the second half. The Flyers got their only points early in the fourth quarter, when a host of Lindbergh defensive players …

Turnovers prove costly, as Lions give up three late touchdowns in 26-6 loss at Lindbergh.
On a night when the folks at Lindbergh High in Sunset Hills, planned to throw their biggest football party of the year to celebrate Homecoming, it was the absolute desperate-for-a-win group from Northwest High that showed up with plans on spoiling it for the Flyers. And for 43 minutes, Friday night at Lindbergh's Flyers Field, the Lions were doing a fantastic job of ruining all the fun for the Flyers, keeping what was supposed to be a home team blowout tied at 6 apiece. But in the final five minutes, Northwest finally caved. With two critical turnovers and a botched fake punt, Lindbergh put up three easy touchdowns, propelling the Flyers to pull out a 26-6 Homecoming victory over the Lions. "I'm sure it's exciting for the kids (to win …
The Lions commit three critical miscues in the final five minutes that lead to three Lindbergh touchdowns in 26-6 loss.
A good old-fashioned smash-mouth, defensive struggle of a football game became a rather convincing Homecoming Night victory for Lindbergh on Friday night, as the Flyers scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes to defeat Suburban West Conference rival Northwest, 26-6. Both teams had their struggles with turnovers and sloppy play, but Lindbergh's Garrett Krueger made big play after big play all night for the Flyers, including an unofficial stat count of 242 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to lead his club to the win. It was his fumble return for a touchdown that got Lindbergh on the board in the first quarter, and Krueger's 1-yard plunge through the line in the fourth quarter that gave the Flyers the lead for good in a victory …

The Flyers beat the Panthers 4-1 Tuesday.
Hitting struggles countered solid pitching by Mehlville’s Kurt McGuire as the Panthers fell to the Flyers 4-1 Tuesday at Lindbergh. In the first of a two-game series, Lindbergh got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a single RBI by Jesse Maness. Kendall Helbert drove in another run before ending the inning. Lindbergh scored again in the third thanks to Jack Manley, who drove in the Flyers’ last two runs. Matt Feldt also went three-for-three with two doubles and a single. Mehlville struggled at the plate, going three-up, three-down in the 3rd through 5th innings. “We had a really good starting pitching performance by Jay Heller," Lindbergh coach Darin Scott said. "He went out there and kept them off balance, did a really …

Northwest girls soccer edges Seckman
The spring season has not begun for all area teams, especially those that had spring break last week, but there were some memorable first week performances. Mehlville scored six times in the fifth inning to defeat rival Oakville 8-1 Tuesday. The Panthers pounded out 13 hits in the game with five different players (Chris Janssen, Austin Kretzer, Austin Simokaitis, Dylan Okenfuss and Matt Regan) having two each. Janssen went the distance on the mound for the Panthers. He gave up 10 hits, including three by Greg Gralike, but did not walk anyone. The next day was a different story for the Panthers, who fell to Lindbergh 15-2. Sean Murphy had a huge day at the plate for the Flyers as he had three hits, all doubles, and four RBI. Oakville …

Flyers’ Jordan Goodman throws 70-yard touchdown pass to Grant Krueger with 1:32 left to lead Lindbergh to heart-stopping win.
The Lindbergh Flyers pulled out one of the most exciting wins of the 2011 season Friday night at Flyers Field when senior Jordan Goodman threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to teammate *Grant Krueger with just over a minute left in the game to lead the Flyers to a 20-15 victory over visiting Mehlville. The Panthers had just taken the lead moments earlier when backup quarterback Brendan Moore scored on a 1-yard sneak and teammate Patrick Partee added a two-point conversion run to give Mehlville a 15-14 advantage. But Lindbergh pulled off a near miracle with Goodman’s heave to Krueger that probably saved the Flyers' season, and gives them a shot at making the state playoffs if they can defeat SLUH next Friday night. Mehlville was eliminated from …

With 31 seniors back, including QB Peter Simpson and LB Chris Kew, Lindbergh is looking for its third straight Suburban West Conference championship.
SUNSET HILLS—Even with back-to-back Suburban West Conference championships on its résumé, Lindbergh High football coach Tom Beauchamp refuses to let his 2011 club bask in the glow of the program’s past glory. Instead, Beauchamp insists that every one of his Flyer teams develop its own identity and credit its own legacy based on its own success. “First thing I say to them is, 'You aren’t last year, and you aren’t two years ago,'” Beauchamp said. “That was a different team that accomplished those things and won those championships. These guys have to make their own name. They have to be ready to play on their own.” The 2011 Flyers will be hard-pressed to top the accomplishments of the ’09 and ’10 teams, which went 10-1 and 9-3, respectively…
