Notebook: Winter Sports Season Concludes

Lindbergh wrestling sees major postseason success, and Summit and Northwest basketball earn basketball honors.

Sometimes a team’s record only tells part of the story. And while Lindbergh High School’s wrestling team finished the year with a 4-4 record in dual meets, coach Josh Hansel calls the season a success. “I don’t think our record indicates how strong we were,” Hansel said. “We had our ups and downs in dual meets. Our coaching staff tends to view our duals as a chance for the kids to wrestle matches. We don’t put kids in duals that are sick or injured, but we take our tournaments very seriously.” Lindbergh placed 10th in the 24-team Lee Summit Tournament, second in the 12-team Flyer Classic at Lindbergh High School, and first in the Howell North Tournament this season. “Tournaments are a big deal for us,” Hansel said. “The kids get to wrestle…

Lindbergh Boys Trying to Shake Off Cold Spell

Eureka makes eight 3-pointers and wins at Lindbergh, 51-38. The Flyers have struggled in recent weeks.

Lindbergh coach Jason Wolfard warned his players that Eureka was a good 3-point shooting team. On Tuesday night, his Flyers found out for themselves. Eureka hit eight 3-pointers and held off a late Lindbergh run to down the Flyers, 51-38, in front a small crowd at Lindbergh High School. It was Lindbergh's fourth loss in five games. (Sports editor's update: Lindbergh won at Lutheran South, 63-57, on Wednesday to go to 9-9.) The Flyers in turn went 0-for-10 from behind the arc, getting outscored 24-0 on 3-pointers. Down by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, Lindbergh rallied to cut the deficit to three at 39-36 early in the fourth quarter but was outscored 12-2 down the stretch to lose for the eighth time in their past 11 games. “We …

Flyers Cannot Overcome Kirkwood in Back-and-Forth Game

Kirkwood plays good defense late in the game, and withstands the Flyers' final flurry to win, 54-53.

In a back-and-forth, tight game the Kirkwood Pioneers boys basketball team hung on for a 54-53 win over the Lindbergh Flyers on Friday night. Down by one point in the final seconds, Lindbergh senior guard Will Spitzfaden stole Kirkwood’s inbound pass, but missed an inside shot, and then junior guard Joe Killian’s follow-up shot also missed as time expired. “The guys kept fighting,” Lindbergh coach Jason Wolford said. “Gave themselves a chance to win it.” Kirkwood’s big road win puts them at 9-9 overall, and Lindbergh falls to 7-8. “We got the steal and it looked like we were going to pull it off,” Lindbergh senior center Jared Haenni said, “We did our best, and they played some good D at the end.” Kirkwood came up with big defensive plays …

Lindbergh Girls Falter in Own Tournament

The frustrated Flyers endure a 46-35 loss to St. Charles in the first round of its Lindbergh Tournament.

Lindbergh girls basketball coach Bill Thoele had a hard time thinking of a worse performance by his team following the Flyers’ 46-35 loss to St. Charles in the first round of the Lindbergh Tournament on Monday night. Entering the game averaging almost 56 points per game, the Flyers had their worst offensive output of the season, including scoring just 20 points in the first half. They also had what Thoele called their worst defensive game of the season, looking nothing like the team that averages more than 20 steals per game. The result was a first-round exit for Lindbergh in its own tournament. The fourth-seeded Flyers, 11-4, will still play in the consolation semifinals on Thursday against eighth-seeded University City, while St. Charles…

Tourney Review: Frustration For Lindbergh, Summit Boys

Poor shooting plagues Lindbergh while close losses spoil the fun for Rockwood Summit at the Dave Sinclair Memorial Invitational at Lindbergh High School.

Facing the defending state champions in the semifinals of the Dave Sinclair Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Lindbergh High School, the host Lindbergh Flyers came out scared. They turned the ball over. They missed shots. They didn’t rebound. They didn’t play defense. The result? They found themselves down 24-3 to No. 1 seeded Springfield Hillcrest midway through the second quarter. A few days after Alabama coach Nick Saban visited his school to recruit him for football, 6-foot-6 junior Dorial Green scored the first 10 points for Hillcrest and outscored the entire Lindbergh team 17-12 by halftime. Lindbergh woke up in the second half, but the deficit was just too big to overcome. They lost 51-39 to Hillcrest, which went on to demolish …

Lindbergh Cannot Complete Rally Against Rival Vianney

Vianney and Lindbergh renew their intense rivalry on Friday night, and Vianney hangs on to win, 78-67.

Don’t try telling Vianney and Lindbergh that the District Tournament is still one month away. The rivals had another back-and-forth battle on Friday night as Vianney overcame a late Lindbergh run and held off the Flyers for a 78-67 win in front of a packed and energetic crowd at Lindbergh High School in what could be a preview of next month's district final. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, Lindbergh (5-5) cut the deficit to three at 67-64 with 1:15 to play. But Vianney (8-7) hit their free throws and the Flyers were called for a key charging foul with 57 seconds remaining and the Golden Griffins held on for a thrilling win over their rival. “What a great atmosphere,” said Vianney coach Kevin Walsh. “When we play …

Flyers Fumble Proves Costly in Loss to Kirkwood

Lindbergh loses possession with 13 seconds left and Kirkwood takes advantage with two free throws to beat the Flyers, 51-49, at Meramec.

If Lindbergh coach Jason Wolfard had a chance to do things over again, he likely would have called a timeout with his club holding the ball with 20 seconds left and the score tied against Kirkwood. The teams played on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the loser's bracket of the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament. Instead of setting up for the last shot, Wolfard called out a play from the sidelines and decided to trust his players in the final seconds. But the plan backfired when the ball slipped through the hands of senior forward Charley Mueller and into the hands of a Kirkwood defender with just 13 seconds left. Kirkwood guard Justin Byrd then drove the lane, got fouled, and made both free throws with 6.8 seconds left. The Flyers missed …

Lindbergh Boys Cannot Hold Off CBC in Tourney Opener

The 15th-seeded Flyers pushed No. 2 seed CBC, but lost, 67-54, at the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament.

Had seeding for the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament not been done the first week of the season, the Lindbergh Flyers would have been much higher than the No. 15 seed in the 16-team tournament. They showed why on Tuesday night. Entering the tournament with just one loss on the season, the Flyers led the No. 2-seed CBC Cadets by five points at halftime, and gave them a scare for much of the night before fading in the second half and losing, 67-54, at Meramec. Lindbergh (5-2) made a valiant attempt to be the first No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 seed in the tournament's 33-year history, but couldn't overcome 25 points each from CBC's Darion Rackley and Seth Jackson. The Flyers led by as many as nine points in the first quarter and held leads …

Lindbergh Cruises to Fifth Win in a Row

Flyers easily handle Francis Howell North with a win at the Suburban Basketball Challenge at the Family Arena on Friday.

The Lindbergh Flyers boys basketball team cruised to an easy victory against the Francis Howell North Knights on Friday on the opening night of the inaugural GAC/Suburban Basketball Challenge at the Family Arena in St. Charles. FHN sought to post its first win of the season as the team entered the contest with an 0-5 record, but fell behind early against Lindbergh and were unable to catch up. The Lindbergh Flyers raised its record to 5-1 with the 59-44 win. Lindbergh's outside shooting overwhelmed the Knights, as they hit a trio of three-pointers to leave Knights down 31-21 at the end of the half. FHN narrowed lead with strong defensive pressue as senior Andre Wooten stole the ball at mid court and passed to sophomore Kyle Lemons for a …

Lindbergh Dominates Parkway Central for Fourth Straight Win

The Flyers cruised after a very strong first half, and rolled to their fourth-straight win, 59-34 over Parkway Central on Tuesday night.

With his team leading 29-15 at halftime, Lindbergh boys basketball coach Jason Wolfard went into the locker room unsure what to say negatively to his team. He couldn't get mad at the shooting after they went 6-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. He couldn't be upset with how they took care of the ball after they committed just six turnovers. And he surely couldn't find fault with a stifling defense that allowed Parkway Central just two points in the second quarter. "We went in there at halftime and tried to find something we could get on them for to do better," Wolfard joked. "We got on them for offensive rebounds but couldn't really get on them too much for that because we shot the ball so well and didn't have many opportunities." The …
