Remembering Jefferson County's Fallen Heroes on Peace Officers Memorial Day

Law enforcement officers, government and community leaders gathered on Wednesday to remember the peace officers who died in the line of duty in Jefferson County. It was a way to honor fallen officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day. In a small gathering at the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Memorial at the sheriff's department in Hillsboro, Lt. Col. Steve Meinberg and others read the names of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during their law enforcement career, dating back to De Soto Police Marshall Willis Dearing, who died Dec. 16, 1897 after being shot by an intoxicated man he pursued from a restaurant. Horse Thief Nabs Two Animals in Dittmer

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department investigated these incidents.

Highland Drive, Dittmer A horse thief stole two Arabian horses sometime between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. May 12 from a property on Highland Drive, in Dittmer. The value of the horses was set at $3,000. A sheriff's report stated that a dark brown Polish Arabian horse that had a black mane and tail and was 15.1 hands tall (about 5 feet) and a white/gray Egyptian Arabian horse with a dark mane and tail and measuring 15.2 hands tall (a little over five feet) were missing from their pasture. There was no evidence the horses escaped and the area to which the horses usually go when they breach the fence was checked, to no avail. Jefferson County to Honor Fallen Officers Wednesday

The roll call will include Deputy Terry O'Connell who was gunned down after a traffic stop on Highway 30 on April 5, 1978.

Ten law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will be remembered at a prayer breakfast and ceremony Wednesday, which is designated at Peace Officers Memorial Day. The ceremonies will take place at the Law Enforcement Memorial in Hillsboro. Among those remembered will be Deputy Terry O'Connell, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Apr. 5, 1978. Other officers on the memorial include Sheriff Leo E. Church who was killed in a fatal car crash on May 2, 1960. Church's wife, Helen, was appointed sheriff to fill her husband's unexpired term, Hefferson County Chief Deputy James Marsden, who was killed by a gas drive-off suspect on July 11, 1957, Jefferson County Deputy William Myers, who was seriously injured by  an armed …

Jefferson County Law Enforcement to Honor its Fallen Heroes Wednesday

Prayer breakfast and memorial ceremony will honor those who have paid the ultimate price as they served and protected.

The public is invited to the annual prayer breakfast and and memorial service to recognize those peace officers in Jefferson County who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony will be at the law enforcement Officers Memorial site in Hillsboro. the memorial honors law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty. Each year on May 15 the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department hosts a ceremony ceremony at the memorial site. The memorial was announced on Police Memorial Day (May 15) in 2001. Construction of the memorial itself was paid for though public donations and other fund-raising activities. Red and White Boat and Trailer Stolen from Home

Weekly incidents investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

The following was reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Shaffley Lane, Cedar Hill A red and white Nitro 188 sport boat on a boat trailer were stolen sometime between May 2-3 from a detached shed at a home on Shaffley Lane, Cedar Hill. The value of the items was set at $5,000. A deputy' report indicated the boat owner had no leads on who the thief was. A canvas of the neighborhood produced no results. Appaloosa Trail, High Ridge A Toro lawn mower valued at $700 was stolen from an unlocked garage at a home on Appaloosa Trail, High Ridge. The homeowner and his wife, who are hearing impaired said they saw the mower on the evening of May 1. They said someone opened the unlocked third garage door to the home and took the mower …

Trailer Full of Tools Stolen From Construction Site

Thefts of construction tools and supplies are being investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

The following incidents have been reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Ridge Point Drive, High Ridge A work trailer containing tools and other equipment was stolen Apr. 29 from a construction site on Ridge Point Drive, High Ridge. Missing were a sledgehammer, a compressor, a glue gun,  a generator, three framing guns, a SawzAll, two saws, 10 hoses and six electric cords. The value of the trailer and items was set at $6,190. The trailer was last seen on the job site at 9 p.m. Apr. 28. The sheriff's deputy who responded to the call found a padlock that had been left behind the trailer. W. Woman Sends $2,800 to Haiti in Scam

The following information was reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Oswald Lane, Cedar Hill A Cedar Hill woman who lives on Oswald Lane in Cedar Hill is out $2,800 after she sent the money to Haiti on Apr. 24, believing her grandson needed the money to be released from police custody there, according to a report from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. The report stated the woman was contacted by a man who said he was an officer at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, advising her that her grandson needed money to be released from police custody. Belt Buckles, Jewelry Stolen in Home Theft

The following information was reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Twenty belt buckles and approximately 100 pieces of costume jewelry items were stolen Apr. 19 from a home on Terrace Drive, House Springs. The homeowner told sheriff's deputies she left home 4:30 p.m. and returned at 1:40 a.m. to find her home safe in a hallway. She said she left the home safe unlocked and that the photographs and letters inside had been scattered on her back porch. The 20 belt buckles had been stolen from a spare bedroom and her jewelry boxes, now empty, had been left on the floor. The value of the stolen items was set at $600. Dough Mixer Stolen From Fenton Business

The following information was reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Gravois Road, Fenton A $5,000 Hobart dough mixer, valued at $5,000, was stolen Apr. 15 from a business on Gravois Road in Fenton. The victim of the theft, as well as two witnesses, said they saw three men load the mixer onto a trailer that was being pulled by a black SUV. A canvass of the area yielded no results. The investigation is ongoing.

Fenton Mom Charged With Child Endangerment

Jamie Catanzaro left her 2-year-old son at home for several hours with both doors to the residence unlocked, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies say.

A 29-year-old Fenton mom is facing charges after leaving her 2-year-old son at home in his crib for several hours, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies say. Jamie Catanzaro, of the 1000 block of Stone Bluff Dr., has been charged with second-degree child endangerment by the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. On Feb. 19 Catanzaro left her son at home unsupervised in his crib for two to three hours, according to court documents. Both doors to the home were unlocked. Second-degree child endangerment is a class A misdemeanor that carries with it a punishment of up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
