Jefferson County Library Accepting Canned Food for Fines

The library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each donated food item.

Jefferson County Library will continue its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty on the final Friday of each month during 2013. The next amnesty date is Feb. 22.  Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2013 the library will forgive up to one dollar infines for each can of food donated. On Jan. 25 the library collected 571 canned food items and waived $512 in overdue fines. During 2012 the library collected a total of 6,827 canned food items and waived $6,362 in overdue fines. All the food collected is donated to area food pantries. There is no limit on the number or amount of fines that can be cleared, but bills for lost or damaged library items, orfines or bills …

            Jefferson County Library (JCO) will continue its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty on the final Friday of each month during 2013. The first amnesty date for 2013 is Friday, Jan. 25. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2013 the library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each can of food donated.             On December 28 the library collected 634 canned food items and waived $582 in overdue fines. Jefferson County Library continues to offer its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty on the final Friday of each month during 2012. The next amnesty date is Friday, November 30. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2012 the library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each can of food donated.             On October 26 the library collected 671 canned food items and waived $562 in overdue fines. Library 'Food for Fines' Program Continues Apr. 27

Jefferson County Library continues to offer its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty program on the final Friday of each month. The next amnesty date is Friday, April 27. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2012, the library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each can of food donated.             On March 30 the library collected 461 canned food items and waived $416 in overdue fines. For the first quarter of 2012 the library collected 1,510 canned food items and waived $1,460 in overdue fines. All the food is donated to local food pantries. Overdue Library Books? Last Friday of Each Month a Can of Food is Worth $1

The Jefferson County Library instituted its "Food for Fines" amnesty program eight years ago.

Jefferson County Library has been doing its part to help stock food pantries since 2005. That’s when it started accepting canned food items as payment for overdue books. It’s the library’s "Food for Fines" amnesty program. Every branch in the system takes part. On the last Friday of every month, each can of food is worth one dollar toward overdue fines. Each branch distributes the food to nearby food pantries. In 2011, the libraries waved $7,860 worth of fines. That worked out to 8,728 canned food items collected and delivered to food pantries. That was an increase of more than 13 percent over the preceding year. Library director Pam Klipsch said $7,860 doesn't amount to that big of a chunk from the library's budget. “We charge fines to …

So far this year, $4,068 in fines have been forgiven and 4,420 cans of food collected in the amnesty program.

The library is again offering amnesty for book fines on Friday in a continuation of a program that so far this year has resulted in forgiveness of $4,068 in fines and collection of 4,420 cans of food. The Jefferson County Library continues to offer its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty once a month during 2011. The next date is June 24. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2011 the library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each can of food donated. On May 27 the library collected 658 canned food items and waived $702 in overdue fines. For the first five months of 2011 the library has collected a total of 3,682 canned food items and waived a total of $3,363 in fines. All the food collected is donated to local food pantries.
