For the last 62 years, the Gravois Trails District of the Boy Scouts of America have organized the decoration of graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for Memorial Day.
If one good turn deserves another, what do 5,000 good turns deserve? In what has become a 62-year tradition on Memorial Day weekend for the Boy Scouts of America, more than 5,000 Scouts decorated more than 138,000 graves Sunday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in South County. The Gravois Trails District of the Boy Scouts of America organizes the annual ceremony, which brings together 200 Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews and Girl Scout Troops from South County and the surrounding area. Gravois Trails encompasses the Mehlville, Lindbergh, Affton, Hancock Place and parts of the Rockwood School Districts in South County and the public and private schools that sponsor Scouting groups. Fenton's Cub Scout Pack 778 learn about teamwork at their annual soap box derby race.
Cub Scouts from Stanton Elementary in Fenton put their mechnical and wood working know how to the test as they raced home made soap box derby cars in an annual Pack event. Each den of boys built their race car as a group project, with a little help from their dads. The boys took turns driving and launching the cars, with each scout getting behind the wheel several times. Chris Hurst, an assistant Wolf Den leader, said that most of the boys built their cars the first year they entered the Cub Pack, as 6 to 7 year old Tigers. Some groups built their car from scratch and kept it year after year with only a few modifications. Dens are free to build a new car if they like, and many are made from parts recycled from retired cars passed down to …

Cub Scouts from Pack 776 bake over 600 festive cookies to celebrate the Christmas season.
Cookies with sprinkles, cookies shaped like trees and even cookies sporting pretzel "reindeer" antlers overloaded five tables at Wednesday's Cub Scout Pack 776 Dad and Lad Cookie Bake Off. It is the fifth year for the cookie baking contest held by Pack 776 from Uthoff Valley Elementary in Fenton. The tradition started as a way to add some fun to the last meeting before Christmas and encourage a little father-son bonding. The rules are simple: boys must bake their cookies with their dad, grandpa, uncle or other any other male relative—no moms allowed. David Lamping, a second grader and Wolf Cub Scout, baked the Grand Champion Most Festive Cookie, which he described as a sugar cookie shaped like an arrow. When asked what his secret was he …

The elementary school parent-teacher group votes against rechartering Pack 776, ending a five-year relationship with the Boy Scouts of America.
The Uthoff Valley Elementary School PTO decided to break its ties to the Boy Scouts of America and refused to continue its sponsorship of Cub Scout Pack 776 and Boy Scout Troop 776. Both units are comprised of current and former Uthoff Valley students and their parents. Four other Fenton school parent-teacher organizations already have agreed to continue sponsoring scout groups: Kellison, Bowles, Stanton and Rockwood South Middle. A Boy Scout council representative said seven of 19 Rockwood School District PTOs have ended their partnerships with the scouts. According to BSA materials, sponsors only have a few important responsibilities: providing a meeting place for scouts and approving leadership. The sponsoring organization can also …
