Hancock's speech during his final meeting as mayor of Fenton makes reference to Lucille Ball and the "anti-city administrator"
On Thursday, departing Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock presided over his final meeting of the city's Board of Aldermen, a responsibility he's had for the past 12 years. He gave up his post voluntarily, announcing his decision last fall that he would not seek re-election. Mike Polizzi won the mayor's seat in the Apr. 2 election. What follows is a transcript of Hancock's parting words to the city he served: Tonight is a very rare event in our city. For the first time in over 40 years, a sitting mayor has willingly given up his office. The only other mayor to do so was Garrett Hitzert. Jim Garrett left after one term because he was transferred by his employer. That puts me in unique company. It also means that I've had over a year to prepare for …
A look at the numbers that define the City of Fenton
It takes more than numbers to define a city, of course, especially in the City of Fenton, which is defined in various geographic ways, sometimes to the chagrin of city officials and "Fenton" residents who are either in the city limits or just outside the town's borders. The Fenton city limits roughly are defined by the Meramec River on the north and east, by Bowles Avenue on the west, by New Smizer Mill Road on the southwest and by Harbor Bluff Drive on the southeast. The 63026 ZIP Code (generally known as Fenton), encompasses other unincorporated areas in St. Louis and Jefferson counties and are governed by a county council in those jurisdictions. New residents often are surprised when they move to "Fenton" that they don't enjoy the same…

Director of the utility says it is gathering facts and information in the "very early" stage of potential redevelopment of the old Chrysler auto assembly plant site.
Those who run Kirkwood Electric, the Kirkwood's own power company, always are looking for ways to deliver power to Kirkwood residents in a practical and economical way, according to Mark Petty, director of the Kirkwood Electric utility. Petty currently has his eyes on the abandoned Chrysler site in the City of Fenton as a potential location for a new natural gas-powered electric generating plant. "It's very early in the process," Petty said Thursday. "We're going to get all of our data together before moving on to a next step." Petty said the data collection has the potential of ruling out the Chrysler site as being unfeasible for expanding the Kirkwood portfolio. "Absolutely it may not be a good fit," he said. "We're doing due diligence…

Mayor Dennis Hancock said he and the city's Board of Aldermen doesn't believe it should support an organization that works against its membership.
The Fenton Board of Alderman unanimously voted against renewing its membership in the St. Louis County Municipal League at its meeting last week. The move comes after previous efforts by Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock and State Rep. Mike Leara (R-St. Louis County) to eliminate or phase out a sales tax distribution system were opposed by the Municipal League. The league is a non-profit association whose membership includes St. Louis County, St. Louis City and most of the 90 municipalities in the metro area. “The board that feels that in the discussions that have been had over the last few years regarding the sales tax distribution, the municipal league should have taken a neutral position,” Hancock said. Approved by voters in 1993, the …

Fenton pharmacies are among top statewide sellers of pseudoephedrine products, although meth lab seizures remain low.

Fenton pharmacies are among top statewide sellers of pseudoephedrine products, although meth lab seizures remain low.
The City of Fenton has become the newest focal point in the battle against methamphetamine as the Board of Aldermen considers making pseudoephedrine medications only available by prescription. But the battle is as much about competing philosophies and use of statistics as it is about finding and busting meth labs. Pseudoephedrine, which is contained in such sinus relief products as Sudafed and Actifed, is a key ingredient in the manufacture of meth. One statistic is clear cut: Three of the top seven retailers in Missouri for the sale of pseudoephedrine products are located in the Fenton area. The Walgreens at 1001 Bowles Ave., which is just over the City of Fenton's border, is No. 1 in the state, with 1,813 boxes of medications sold last …

The credit union donated $500 to a group that provides support for special needs kids. A public grand opening is set for Saturday.
Neighbors Credit Union was giving away money Wednesday as it had a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to preview it's new location on 612 Gravois Road in Olde Towne Fenton. John Servos, president and CEO of Neighbors C.U. wielded the big scissors and, with the help of Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock, who wielded a smaller scissors, sliced through a ribbon that was embedded with $10 bills. The $500 attached to the ribbon will be donated to Team Activities for Special Kids (TASK) a non-profit group that provides sport and social opportunities for kids with special needs in the St. Louis area. The special preview, attended by Neighbors C.U. staff and members of the Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce, was an early look at the credit union's new facility. …

Longtime Fenton alderman named as recipient of city's John Fabick Community Service Award.
The late Timothy Trego, on Tuesday, received the most prestigious award from the city he served for nearly 20 years. Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock and the Fenton Board of Alderman named Trego as the 2011 recipient of the city's John Fabick Community Service Award in ceremonies Tuesday at the monthly board of aldermen meeting. Trego's wife, Joyce, and his two daughters, Tracy Buttry and Kim Lederle, and other family members, formally accepted the award on Tim Trego's behalf. Trego was a longtime Fenton alderman who served in that role for almost 20 years, also acting as chairman of the board's police committee. He was known as a strong supporter of law enforcement and was instrumental in bringing Fenton under the auspices of the St. Louis …

Mayor says next year's budget is more hopeful than those of recent years.
The Fenton Board of Aldermen approved a fiscal year 2011 budget Dec. 21 that forecasts the city will end the year with a surplus. The adopted budget calls for $5,701,000 in General and $4,921,000 in Storm Water and Parks funds revenues, against $5,430,400 in General and $4,843,700 in Storm Water and Parks fund expenditures. That leaves a total surplus of $270,000 in the General fund and a $77,600 surplus in the Storm Water and Parks fund. The fiscal year starts Jan. 1, 2011. Mayor Dennis J. Hancock said this year's budget message "was much more positive than the last couple of years' have been" and added he "sincerely hoped the board would look at restoring at least some of the services and programs we suspended last year for our …

I was in the audience last night and I wanted to say that the speech that Dennis gave was heartfelt. I personally don't live in Fenton, but I became emotional at his rendition of how the people in the administration and citizens affected him. I now know why he is was so popular.   more ›
