Brigid James, one of Lindbergh schools' newest additions, said student teaching was her favorite experience as a student.
Lindbergh Schools recently announced that 35 new teachers joined the district for the 2012-2013 school year. Each day, Patch will introduce readers to one of these new educators. Today meet the newest SSD instructor at Kennerly Elementary School. Name: Brigid James New position: Cross Categorical Resource Teacher with SSD at Kennerly Elementary. Tatiana Pontious and Hannah Tullmann decided to donate their hair after they each cut off 14 inches in June.
This summer, two Kennerly Elementary School fifth-grade girls donated more than two feet of hair to Locks of Love. Tatiana Pontious and Hannah Tullmann decided to donate their hair after they each cut off 14 inches in June. The girls were able to collect four ponytails from Hannah’s hair alone! Locks of Love uses the donated hair to make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to various cancer treatments.

A message from Northwest High School: Northwest High School has cancelled the annual open house scheduled for Thursday night, Aug. 30. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The NHS family has lost one of its faculty members and visitation is Thursday evening. Rescheduling was considered but parent/family and other building conflicts deterred us from moving the date. Teachers, principals, and counselors are available by email or by telephone if needed. Parent teacher conferences will occur from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 17 -18 and we encourage participation one of these dates.

With students back in school, St. Louis County police are adding patrols around schools and bus stops.
The St. Louis County Police Department issued details of increased patrols in a news release last week. Authorities said that patrols will be increased in areas around schools, bus stops and in speed zones. Officers also will be watching for drivers not obeying the stop arms on buses. Police said it's all part of the St. Louis County Police Department's Back to School Enforcement Program which focuses on the safety of students. The following information was included in the news release. "This program is designed to provide extra visibility and enforcement, especially in our neighborhoods and around school buildings," noted Chief of Police Tim Fitch. Stemming from a large donation from Maritz, local teachers can apply for new grants ranging from $500 to $5,000. Deadline is Sept. 7—spread the creative word!
Arts and Education Council representatives will accept applications for the Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers until Friday, Sept. 7. Applicants may visit council's website for more information. Grants will be made only for programs that take place from Oct. 15, 2012 to June 14, 2013 in the 16-county, bi-state St. Louis metropolitan region: Arts and Education Council managers announced Thursday they had received a $30,000 donation from Maritz to fund the third year of the highly successful and award-winning Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers. There is not a backpack or a school bus in sight in some of the school photos from earlier days in High Ridge, as seen in the collection of historical images collection of the Jefferson County Library. There also were no worries about crowded hallways in the old buildings as many of them were one-room schools. The old school photographs recently were made available by the Jefferson County Library as a way to spark interest in Jefferson County history. The photographs are being shared on Flickr, the popular photo-sharing service.
