The GOP frontrunner in the race for Missouri's Second Congressional District says she's focused on debating voters in the waning days of the primary campaign. One of her opponents says he's been trying to arrange a debate since March.
With two weeks left before the August 7 primary, candidates are scrambling to reach out to every possible vote, attending event after event and forum after forum. But time is running out for candidates to appear at the same time and in the same place. In the Republican primary in the2nd congressional district, which includes Fenton, the last such opportunity may have taken place Tuesday, when Ann Wagner and Dr. Randy Jotte spoke at a St. Louis County Republican Women’s forum. While they talked health care, energy, and the economy, the most heated portion of the forum came as the candidates argued over campaign tactics in the closing days. Jotte claims he’s been seeking a debate since March, through press releases and contacts between the …

Doctor in Missouri's Second Congressional District faces an uphill climb in the race to succeed Rep. Todd Akin.
The clock is ticking. With just under a month before voters go to the polls to decide the fate of primary campaigns up and down the ballot, time is running out to march in parades, shake hands and kiss babies. Ann Wagner, the Ballwin Republican who has been campaigning for the GOP nomination in Missouri's 2nd Congressional district for more than a year, has recently put her second campaign advertisement on television. And that battle has now been joined. Dr. Randy Jotte, the former Webster Groves Councilman and current ER physician who entered the race in January, launched his own advertising on cable this month, trying to introduce himself as the primary campaign heads into its closing stretch. Patch sat down with Dr. Jotte at The Daily …

Chesterfield state senator will instead run for a second term in the Missouri Senate.
State Sen. Jane Cunningham will not run for Congress next year. With U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, R-2nd district, vacating his seat in Congress to run for the U.S. Senate, Cunningham, R-St. Louis County, had expressed interest in running for the U.S. 2nd District House seat. But she told a St. Louis radio station on Wednesday morning that she would instead run for re-election for her western St. Louis County state Senate seat. In a phone interview with Patch, Cunningham said her decision came down to where she could “have the most impact.” “But it took a lot of time to thoroughly look at it, because running for Congress was a really nice political opportunity that was very inviting,” Cunningham said. With nearly a decade of running--and winning--…
He could not be reached to react to Cunningham's decision against running for Congress.
U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan—who said he was taking a serious look at running for the 2nd District seat earlier this year—is biding his time before making a decision. Carnahan, whose third district is being swallowed up as part of a redistricting, cannot run for reelection to his existing seat. At an event at an Oakville senior center in late June, Carnahan was asked by an audience member how his 2012 intentions would be affect by redistricting. “Right now, (South County) is in with a new 2nd Congressional District. Part of my district is in the new 2nd, part of it is in the new 1st,” Carnahan said. “But also, we hear that there may be some court challenge to the maps. And so we’re going to be watching, obviously with great interest, to see …

The current and former county executives weigh in on the effect of the county being part of three congressional districts.
Jefferson County was sliced and diced and doled out piecemeal to make up population goals for three different congressional districts as Missouri lawmakers approved a redistricting map to take effect in Jan. 2013. The situation is either a disaster for Jefferson County interests or a potential boon in the long run, depending on whom you ask. Former Jefferson County Executive Chuck Banks, a Democrat, blames the Republican-controlled General Assembly. "It's pretty clear it was their intention to dismantle Jefferson County," Banks said. "It's very unfortunate and we have to wait 10 years to change it." Current Jefferson County Executive Ken Waller, a Republican, says it may be challenging at first, but says the county could benefit from …
A political shuffle is underway as Rep. Todd Akin, (R-2nd District) decides to run for the U.S. Senate.
Forget trying to compare politics in the St. Louis region to musical chairs. A more fitting analogy is comparing the political shuffle currently underway to completing a jigsaw puzzle in the dark and with a missing piece. In a previous column, I outlined a speculative theory making the rounds, which I called “The Long Con.” It also happens to be the title of the 38th episode of the TV show Lost. I still find this to be the most intriguing theory. The announcement on Tuesday by Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican, that he is officially entering the 2012 race for Senate to try and replace Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, is a key development in the political plot. For those of you just joining, a lot was riding on the decision by Akin. In …

I attended this event and in my view Mrs. Wagner has cause to fear a debate, it is her race to lose and Dr. Jotte presented himself as far more informed on the critical issues facing our country today. I would love nothing more than to see a debate among the candidates seeking this office. Sadly, I don't think Mrs. Wagner will ever participate, it easier for her to coast along running ads with …   more ›
