Bowles Elementary is one of only nine schools in the state to receive a School of Excellence Award from the Missouri Schools of Character Awards program. The school also was named as a "Top Ten" school in mathematics in 2008-09. In 2006, Bowles was the recipient of a Character Promising Practices Award through the Character Education Partnership. The school mascot is the cougar.
