The Fenton Fire District is responsible for serving 65,000 residents in a 26-mile area in southwest St. Louis County, which includes the Fenton, Sunset Hills and unincorporated areas. The district employs 62 staff members, all cross-trained as firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. The departent was established in 1932 with an all-volunteer force and a single fire truck, affectionately known as Old Betsy. The department became a tax-supported district in 1959, alowing it to employ professional firefighters to supplement the volunteers. The Fenton Fire District staff provides a variety of community services, including a child car seat inspections, CPR classes and fire station tours, all free of charge.
