Feed My People In Desperate Need Of Donations

Food pantry is critically short on back-up food supplies for local families.

Demand is not keeping up with supply at , one of the largest and longest serving food pantries and help centers in South St. Louis County and Northern Jefferson County

The food pantry is in desperate need for food supplies and donations for its regular clientele and for emergency cases.

"We are down to three-to-four days back-up for our regular clientele," said Mary Hettenhausen, a spokeswoman for the High Ridge location. "And that's not taking into consideration our emergency requests."

The need for supplies is a direct correlation to the "sour" economy, she said. In fact, clientele food-service requests have increased by 25 percent since Jan. 1.

"Those who do have jobs have low-end jobs, which do not cover all of their expenses," Hettenhausen said. "A lot of companies are not promoting from within and are hiring part-time workers with no benefits."

She said in addition to cash donations, the pantry is in particular need of breakfast items like cereals and pancake mixes and canned meals that can be microwaved, including meats, ravioli and stews.

Food donation drop-off hours at the High Ridge location are Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 636-677-9885.
