Flood waters pose health, safety risks

Heavy rains that recently came through the St. Louis area have left many communities to deal with flood waters. Although skin contact with flood water does not, by itself, pose a serious health risk, health hazards are a concern when waters become contaminated. Flood waters may contain fecal material, associated bacteria and viruses. Dr. Kyle Moylan, primary care physician with Esse Health at SSM St. Clare, offers the following precautions when dealing with flood water:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water that has been boiled or disinfected.
  2. Avoid eating or drinking anything that has been contaminated with flood waters.
  3. Do not wade or drive through standing water.
  4. Avoid contact with flood waters if you have open cuts or sores. If a new wound develops or a current wound develops redness, swelling or drainage, seek medical attention immediately.
  5. Wear rubber boots and waterproof gloves during cleanup, especially when dealing with sewage backups.
  6. Remove and discard absorbent household materials, such as wall coverings, cloths, rugs and sheetrock that has been in contact with the flood water or sewage.
