Summit Girls Unable to Handle Mehlville

Mehlville beat Rockwood Summit, 57-24, on Wednesday to drop the Falcons to 2-5.

Mehlville girls basketball coach Laura Bishop was not a happy camper on Monday after her team lost to Notre Dame, a team which it soundly defeated in the South Side Classic earlier in the season.

"Coach was extremely upset about how we approached the game and the way we played," Panthers senior forward Jessica Fox said. "I think we came into the game with the thought in the back of our minds that we would win since we had beaten them before. We were over confident."

It was a completely different Mehlville team which stepped onto its home floor on Wednesday night against Rockwood Summit. The Panthers scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back, winning 57-24 to break a three-game losing streak.

Junior forward Kaitlyn Brame, who came into the game averaging 15 points per game for the Falcons, had eight points as did senior center Lauren Fischer to lead Summit (2-5).

Summit next plays on Friday, Dec. 17 at Fox at 7 p.m.

"We learned the other night that we can't take any team for granted," Fox said. "Tonight we came out with a completely different mindset. We had the right mental approach and focus."

Senior guard Chanese Washington hit a 3-pointer to open the game, and Summit coach Debbie Spiezio was forced to call a timeout less than three minutes into the game with Mehlville ahead 7-0.

Bishop had a good feeling coming into the home game against the Falcons, who were starting three freshmen.

"We had a good practice yesterday and got in 90 minutes of intense play," Bishop said. "We came out and did a much better job of execution on both ends of the court. Our defense was much better and we passed the ball extremely well. We had some spectacular passes."

Washington had an outstanding all-around game with several nice passes, including one behind her back.

"Chanese sets the tone for us," Bishop said. "She can score, but I think the best thing she does for us is create scoring opportunities for other players."

Mehlville had a 26-9 halftime advantage and started the second half the same way it did the first, with baskets by sophomore guard Sierra Gray and freshman guard Emily Fox to take a 30-9 lead.

That margin would only grow and the running clock was in play with 4:20 to play in the fourth quarter (the clock runs continuously when a team has a 30-point lead in the final quarter).

Washington led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter, as Mehlville evened its record at 4-4.
