Game Preview: Summit Bracing For Battle With Webster Groves

Rockwood Summit hopes to improve on its 3-1 record at home Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Falcons play undefeated powerhouse Webster Groves.

The last time these two teams faced-off was on Nov. 8, 2010 when Webster Groves defeated Summit by a lopsided score of 52-10.

This time, things should be quite different.

Webster Groves and Summit are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the Suburban South Conference. Both teams have scored over 100 points so far (Webster has 143, and Rockwood has 114). Both teams have held their opponents to 25 points or less in each of their three previous contests.

The Statesmen are currently No. 3 in the Missouri Class 5 rankings.  They are led by highly-touted, 6-foot-3, 175-pound senior quarterback Rayshawn Simmons.

Simmons has passed for 717 yards, 12 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Last week in their 49-28 victory over SLUH, the Statesmen put on an offensive show. SLUH fought hard, scoring four times against the Statemen, but in the second half Webster Groves regained its lead.

Webster proved to everyone that they can play through adversity, as well. In the game, Simmons completed 17-of-34 passes for 276 yards, four touchdowns and also ran for 49 yards and a TD.

Summit is comng off a nonconference, 31-13, victory last week against Francis Howell Central. The Falcons' offense is confidently led by their senior quarterback, Tyler Karst. He comes into the game with a great deal of confidence, completing 65 percent of his passes while gaining over 800 yards and seven touchdowns.

Karst throws with a great deal of precision and accuracy and has only been intercepted on three occasions. Karst’s favorite target has been junior Ian McIntosh, who has 56 receptions for 348 yards and seven touchdowns. He is also the special-teams leader, returning five kickoffs for 165 yards.

Summit’s defense is no slouch, either. Senior defensive end Spencer Matthews has been leading the charge so far with 20 solo tackles, 12 assists, six quarterback sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Overall, the Rockwood defense is well-rounded. The key to a Falcons victory will be slowing down Simmons.
