Falcons Fail To Break Statesmen Winning Streak

Webster Groves wins with a 31-14 victory over Rockwood Summit.

Webster Groves came into Friday's game with a 3-0 record, while scoring almost 48 points in each game. On the team's first possession of the night, the Statesmen needed just 48 seconds and 3 plays to score the first touchdown of the night.

Statesmen senior quarterback, Rayshawn Simmons, met no resistance as he easily guided his team up to the Falcons’ 13-yard line. Simmons gave the ball to his talented running back, Dante Flowers, who then ran untouched into the end zone. The point-after attempt was blocked by Summit.

“I’m disappointed that we did not play very physically up on the offensive line,” said Cliff Ice, Statesmen head coach. “I thought Dante (Flowers) ran the football well.”

Rockwood never seemed to be able to get its offense in gear in the first-half of this game. Senior quarterback Tyler Karst just did not seem to be able to connect either on the ground or through the air in the first half. Although Karst tallied 251 yards in the air during this game, he missed on over half of his passes in the game.

Webster scored its second touchdown on the second possession of the game. Again, Simmons was able to move downfield without much of a threat from the Rockwood defense. Flowers was the culprit again, as he went right up the middle from the 7-yard line for the score. He duplicated this same run and scored on a two-point conversion attempt leaving Webster with the lead at 14-0 with 5:34 left in the first-half.

In the second quarter, Simmons then went to the air for a 47-yard strike to senior wide-receiver Michael Cole. With the first half coming to a close, Webster Groves got as far as the 24-yard line of the Falcons. They were unable to score, so Ben Kemper came onto the field and kicked a 31-yard field goal and extended the lead to 24-0 at halftime.

Summit’s head coach Mike Bellers said, “It took us awhile to get going on offense. There were plays in the first-half that we should have had, and we just need to find ways to start faster.”

In the second half, Webster came out and played with a noticeable lack of focus, making some costly penalties. The Statesmen really seemed to struggle a lot more than in the first half, and Summit quickly took advantage of these mistakes.

With 10:51 left in the game. Karst went out to the right flat and lofted the ball to running back Ian McIntosh for a 14-yard touchdown, end-zone pass. Karst then called for a two-point play. Karst took the ball, tossed it to Joe Schenck, and he delivered it into the hands of the other Falcon running back Eric Beisel. Now the score was cut to 24-8. While at the Statesmen 19-yard line, Karst, again went to the air and found his teammate Luke Hartman for the score. The Falcons tried for a second 2-point attempt, but were unsuccessful leaving the score now at 24-14.

At 1:09 left to go in the game, Simmons added one more touchdown when he hit the senior tight end Ben Arnold on a 15-yard pass.  Webster kept their undefeated streak alive by defeating the Rockwood Summit Falcons, 31-14.
