Student 'Ribbon' Marks Autism Awareness Day

Students at Cedar Springs Elementary School in the Northwest School District learn of the challenges faced by students who have autism.

The High Ridge Fire Department hauled out its ladder truck recently for a photo op at Cedar Springs Elementary School.

Students at Cedar Springs Elementary were participating in an autism awareness day since the school houses the elementary autism program for the Northwest R-I School District. The purpose of the day was to provide students with an understanding of the interactions or behaviors from students who are different.

The district reported that the day began with the entire school community forming an autism awareness ribbon. Students participated in a series of stations that allowed them to experience some of the challenges that students with autism may face in the school setting.

Dalen Schmoll snapped a photo of the student body from the top of the ladder truck as it formed a replica of the autism awareness ribbon.
