Rockwood's Summer School Keeps Students Involved and Learning

The district strives to address the changing needs of residents and students.

While summer programs and classes may change from year to year, Rockwood School District seeks to adapt to the needs of students and their families.

“The programs we offer at Rockwood are designed to keep kids active, engaged and learning,” said Mike Seppi, director of Rockwood Community Education.

Four elementary and two middle schools offer Rockwood Summer Academy; schools hosting the summer academy rotate each year. This year the classes are at , Geggie, Green Pines and Westridge elementary schools and LaSalle Springs and Selvidge middle schools. The program focuses on improving students' language arts and math skills. Teachers and principals identify which students need assistance and notify their parents.

The district also provides a fee-based community education enrichment program as part of the summer academy. Those classes are open to residents of the district and nonresident students.

Babler Outdoor Camp and Boost Your Brain are two of the most popular community education sessions. Both courses are offered in August and provide students with an opportunity to hike, experiment and learn the history of the area. Minicamps are available for more learning opportunities. In response to parent requests, Rockwood has added afternoon sessions, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

“These sessions are a little more laid-back,” Seppi said. “Students can swim, hike, participate in archery and take part in team-building activities. We even run some bus routes.”

Preview for Success classes are available for kindergarten through fifth-grade students as they transition to new classroom experiences. These classes are held in late July.

“Students in these grade levels are excited but also anxious to be going into the next grade. These classes offer a sneak peak at what lies ahead,” Seppi said. “Rockwood teachers developed this curriculum, and it’s been successful. And, these preview classes get kids back into a school routine.”

Elementary school students can also participate in SummerLink. This summer camp offers presentations, projects and field trips to teach students about fine art, science and technology. There's plenty of physical activity, too.

Sports camps are a popular option for many students. Soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and baseball are available for many age groups including some programs for adults.

High school students will find classes that allow them to make up needed coursework. Core subjects such as mathematics, English and science are offered. Other classes include fitness and art.
