Rockwood Students Parents Meet Up with College Reps

The annual Rockwood School District College Fair attracted hundreds of students and families seeking to size up their college opportunities.

More than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools put their best foot forward Monday evening at Rockwood Summit High School with tables of brochures, flyers and small giveway items in an effort to attract the interest of students and parents who attended the annual Rockwood School District College Fair.

The attendees breezed by the college tables, some with an eye toward cementing their decision to attend a specific college, others seeking information to help them make up their mind.

There were lots of pens to be had as most colleges handed them out to those who stopped by to chat.

There were colleges of all types represented including Emory University in Atlanta, whose annual tuition was the highest listed at $58,180 and whose average GPA of accepted freshmen is 3.76 to 4.0. The least expensive college were the military academies for the Air Force and the U.S. Army at West Point, both of which are free, although the standards are high. Sixty-three percent of the applicants accepted at the Air Force academy are in the top 10 percent of their high school class. At West Point, only 8 percent of freshmen applicants are accepted.

Students also had a wide range of choices as to their preference for a large or small school, from Arizona State University and its whopping 53,000 undergraduate population and several other colleges with student populations of fewer than 1,000.
