Playoffs Begin For Area Hockey Teams

Lutheran South and Seckman win first round series in the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs.

The road to the Scottrade Center has begun for area hockey teams as the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs began this weekend.

All teams in the league qualify for the playoffs which are three-tiered. The top flight of teams compete for the St. Louis Blues High School Challenge Cup. The championship game for those teams is scheduled for March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Scottrade Center.

The next tier of teams play for the Wickenheiser Cup which has its championship game prior to the Challenge Cup at 5:30 p.m.

The third tier play for the Founders Cup which will have its championship game Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Queeny Park.

First round series are best-of-two. If teams split the two games, a mini-game will be played following the second game.

Oakville, Lindbergh and Rockwood Summit are area teams which are playing for the prestigious Challenge Cup.

Oakville and Lindbergh each won their first game while Summit lost a tough one-goal game.

Oakville was dominant in its 6-1 victory over Eureka. Adam Schafer scored a pair of goals for the Tigers, who outshot the Wildcats 52-7. The second game of that series will be Monday at 8:45 p.m. at South County.

Cody Guidorzi had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist for Lindbergh in its 4-1 win over Kirkwood. Game two of that series will be at 7 p.m. Monday at South County.

Summit needs a win Monday to force a mini-game in its series against Marquette. The Mustangs won the opener 4-3. Game two will be at 7:40 at the Hardee's IcePlex.

Two area teams have already earned a spot in the second round of the Founder's Cup.

Lutheran South was dominant in its series over Parkway North. Christopher Hill, Cameron Durham and Joseph Sparks had two goals each in an 8-2 win in the first game. The Lancers followed that up with a 9-1 win Saturday night to win the series.

Seckman's defense limited Timberland to just one goal in winning its series. The second game ended in a 1-1 tie with the Jaguars advancing.

Northwest is down 0-1 in its series against Holt. Alex Rojas scored the lone Lion goal in a 5-1 first game loss. The second game will be Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Lindenwood.

Fox and Mehlville are competing in the Founder's Cup Division. Fox won its opener against Fort Zumwalt South 8-4 Saturday. Mehlville tied its game with John Burroughs 1-1. Nicholas Williamson made 30 saves for the Panthers and will need to be sharp again in game two which will be Tuesday at 8:45 at Webster.

Basketball

Lindbergh girls' senior guard Alison Ries scored 19 points as the Flyers defeated Mehlville 37-32 in a match-up of area teams Friday. Sierra Gray scored 18 for the Panthers.

Abby Hayden had a solid game for Seckman Friday with 18 points. She was 5-for-10 from the field but the rest of the team was just 2-for-22 in a 58-25 loss to Kirkwood.

Brentwood outscored Bayless 20-12 in the fourth quarter in a come-from-behind 45-43 win. Tiarra Higgins had 19 points and 10 steals for the Bronchos.

Summit's Kaitlyn Brame had a 20-point game for the Falcons in a 53-29 win over University City.

Area swimmers will have their last chances to make state qualifying times as the state meet will be held Feb. 17 and 18 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Fox sophomore Erin Birschbach scored 16 points and had five steals in an exciting 42-36 overtime win over Oakville Friday. The win was the third in a row for the Warriors.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Seckman's defense limited Timberland to just one goal in winning its series in hockey playoffs. Charles Herculus made 21 saves in a 4-0 shutout win in game one. The second game ended in a 1-1 tie with the Jaguars advancing.
