Lindbergh School District Celebrates First Day

Students at Concord Elementary School started the year off today in a brand new school. The new elementary school building is the first new elementary in the Lindbergh District since Kennerly opened 50 years ago. 

The new school features a library, 35 brightly colored classrooms with state-of-the art interactive teaching technology, two age-specific playgrounds and a competition-size gym. 

Construction progress districtwide and the recent purchase of Dressel School are in response to enrollment projections that showed an increase of almost 450 students in grades K-12 by 2015. 

This year marks the completion of several construction projects resulting from Prop R 2008, a $31 million bond issue to reduce overcrowding at Sperreng Middle School and create neighborhood elementary schools. 

Beth Cross, communications director for the Lindbergh School District, said that the district now has nine schools, including the early childhood education center. 

Truman Middle School, formerly Truman Elementary, features brand new science labs, updated family and consumer science classrooms and a renovated performing arts wing. Sperreng Middle School also underwent renovations to its science lab, fitness room, and installed new sidewalks and lockers. Sperreng and Truman will each have about half the enrollment of Sperreng's 1,350 students in 2010-11. 

"We have about 5,700 students, with the district projects to be above 6,000 by 2015," Cross said. "We haven't been above that many students since 1981-82—this community is starting to flip a little bit and generations of families are coming back." 

Crestwood and Long Elementary Schools also are finishing major renovations, with new main entrances and classroom additions to accommodate new students who previously attended Truman Elementary School. Both schools have new music and art rooms.
