Lindbergh Musicians Mix Strings With Quartet San Francisco

Sperreng, Concord and East Watson student groups played everything from Bach to the Beatles.

Hundreds packed into the Lindbergh High School Auditorium on Wednesday for a night of strings, as Quartet San Francisco joined East Watson String Quartet, Concord String Quartet, and the Sperreng Eighth Grade Orchestra in concert.

Mark Hazlewood, father of East Watson violinist Chrissy Hazlewood, and director of both the East Watson Quartet and the Concord Quartet, arranged for the Quartet San Fransisco to come play with the Lindbergh and Sperreng students after being gifted one of their signed CDs by the Lindbergh String staff.

"It's great to have them here," said Hazlewood. "They arrived yesterday and practiced with each quartet for about an hour and a half each. Then we practiced for about an hour today. Both of the student quartets sounded better than I've ever heard them before, and now tonight they're sounding even better, if that's possible."

The Lindbergh student groups and the Quartet San Francisco played everything from classical to folk to jazz, all but one piece arranged by Jeremy Cohen, but the crowd was most delighted by the occasional familiar Beatles tune in the arrangements, a favorite of Cohen's.
