Hurray for the 19th Amendment!

I am grateful for the vision, dedication and hard work women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and others invested so I have the same right to vote as our fathers, husbands and brothers.

Ninety-three years ago, on June 4, 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  This amendment reads as follows:

Section 1: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Section 2: Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Most of the Americans I know have their own favorite section of the U.S. Constitution.  I must admit, this is mine.

I am so grateful for all the vision, dedication and hard work that women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and countless others invested so that I, and all those who share my gender, have the same right to vote as our fathers, husbands and brothers.  At every chance I get, I encourage women to watch Iron Jawed Angels, a recent movie that illustrates some of the sacrifices our mother’s mothers gave to secure this right.

Without the right to vote, women had significantly limited power to influence the people who wrote and enforced the laws which they were required to follow.
