A new year, a new direction.

Last night was the first regular County Council meeting of 2012. Councilman Groeteke and I joined the minority vote on two important topics, and passed the baton to new leadership.

Last night was the first regular County Council meeting of 2012.  It was an interesting night.  Unfortunately, I found my votes in the minority on several important topics to the citizens of Jefferson County.

First, I was in the minority vote against a resolution limiting speech during the open comment period for future council meetings.  The resolution was amended beyond recognition, and then passed.  I voted “no” not only because it was unclear what the final document included, but also because several citizens had taken the time to ask that this resolution not be passed.

Next,  I found my vote in the minority for establishing an Animal Control board – certain members of the council requested amendments, but could not articulate exactly what amendments they wanted – it appeared that they just did not want to pass this bill… how unfortunate for the pets of Jefferson County and the residents who love them.

On a positive note, however, along with a new year comes the new election of Chair and Vice-Chair of the Council.  Councilman Charles Groeteke and I were able to pass the baton to new leadership, the new Chairman Bob Boyer of District 3 and Vice Chair Kelly Waymon of District 7.  I am proud of what Mr. Groeteke and I accomplished as the first Chair and Vice Chair of this council.  I look forward to seeing what Boyer and Waymon accomplish in the coming year.  Most of all, I look forward to having more time and energy for the wonderful people in District 2.
