Think About Saving Green on St. Patrick's Day

The Missouri Department of Revenue will give everyone a break on sales tax for new appliances.

Fenton businesses, and area residents in the market for new home appliances, stand to benefit from the Green Sales Tax Holiday that runs April 19-25.

No state sales tax, 4.225 percent, will be charged on energy efficient appliances bought in Missouri during that seven-day period.

Fenton, along with 10 other cities in the St. Louis region, will not charge its city sales tax on those purchases. A total sales tax savings of 4.725 percent, Missouri Department of Revenue Deputy Director John Mollenkamp said during a news conference at on Friday morning.

Mollenkamp said the Missouri Department of Revenue was not telling people where to buy their appliances. “That’s why we’re announcing the tax holiday on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, to give people time to research, determine what they want to buy and where.”

Additional sales tax savings occur if the ENERGY STAR rated appliances are purchased at stores located within one of districts found in the St. Louis area.

A consumer buying at Richardson Crossing mall in Arnold, for example, would save a total of 5.975 percent sales tax on each ENERGY STAR labeled appliance bought during those days.

Buyers may save more money if retailers and manufacturers have special discounts on energy efficient appliances during the tax holiday.

The sales tax holiday only applies to the first $1,500 on each appliance, he said. People buying a $1,600 stove, for example, would only pay the state sales tax on $100 of the stove’s price.

The sales tax holiday only applies to the following items:

  • Clothes dryers
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Dishwashers
  • Water heaters
  • Furnaces
  • Air Conditioners
  • Heat Pumps

Televisions, which are ENERGY STAR rated, are not eligible for the tax holiday because those products are not listed in the Missouri State Law for the Green Sales Tax Holiday.
