Owner Hopes to Preserve Inn by the Bandstand

The bed and breakfast in downtown Exeter is for sale.

Exeter's historic Inn By The Bandstand is up for sale.

The property dates back to 1809 and is smack downtown across from Town Hall.

Owner Susan Henderson said she's hoping a buyer will preserve the property.

"It's such a beautiful location," said Henderson. "It's got so much character."

The inn is included on the National Register of Historic Places. The property was built for George Sullivan, who served in Congress and was New Hampshire's attorney general. In the 1970s, there was a proposal to turn the house into an auto garage—but the Exeter Historical Society bought it to prevent that.

George and Muriel Simmons turned it into a bed and breakfast, and in 2000 Henderson bought it and continued its use as an inn.

The property is now going for $690,000.

The inn has three floors, 10 working fireplaces, and 10 baths. It could be converted into a private residence or apartments, Henderson said.

The property also includes the Cornucopia Wine & Cheese Market. Kathleen Campbell, who runs the market, said her business will remain open even if the building is sold because of her lease agreement.
