Sheriff's Office Loses Grant Funding; Narcotics Officers to be Cut

Narcotics Unit already had been operating with less staff; now will be cut even more

In a news relase from the , Sheriff Oliver “Glenn” Boyer said state and federal grant funding used to help fund the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Municipal Enforcement Unit is being cut significantly and will cause a reduction in manpower. 

Boyer said that for the past several years the Narcotics Unit has been operating with approximately 1/3 less from the maximum manpower levels. The latest cut in funding will result in the loss of three additional task force officers.  

This decrease in funding will create a strain on the already busy Narcotics Unit as the use of heroin is up and the unit is on a record pace in methamphetamine lab seizures, Boyer said in the news release

Boyer said the loss will mean the Task Force will be unable to respond to citizens complaints on narcotics issues in a timely manner but we will respond as quickly as possible. 

"We take all information we receive from the community seriously and are able to develop many active narcotics cases as a result," Boyer said in the release.  "We still want the information, we ask our citizens to be patient with our ability to respond in a timely manner."
