News Nearby: Cross Dressing Purse Snatcher Accused in Theft of $500 Coach Bag, Police Say

The man fled into his apartment building a few blocks away, Maplewood Police said. Officers arrested him a short time later.

A man is accused of snatching a $500 Coach purse from an Enterprise Rent-a-Car employee in Maplewood.

Maplewood Police said an Enterprise Rent-a-Car employee reported a car behind the business at 7226 Manchester Road about 12:38 p.m. Thursday. She told police a cross-dressing man opened the passenger-side door of the car, grabbed her purse and ran.

Shortly afterward, Maplewood Police arrested Allen D. Johnson, 31, of the 7200 block of Anna Avenue, at his apartment building a few blocks away.

The woman’s wallet and credit cards were recovered. Police said two of Johnson’s acquaintances retrieved the items from an apartment that Johnson entered as he fled from police.

Johnson was charged Friday by St. Louis County prosecutors with felony theft. Bail was set at $15,000.
