Fenton Police, Jefferson County Sheriff Citizens Academies Set

Citizen police academies in Fenton and Jefferson County to provide information about law enforcement techniques and insight into the functions of the police and sheriff's departments.

Whether your interest is with the Fenton Precinct of the St. Louis County Police Department, or with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, there are "Citizen's academies being organized to provide residents with a better understanding of the two departments and to provide information about various law enforcement techniques.

The Citizen Police Academy, sponsored by the Fenton and West County precincts of the St. Louis County Police Department, starts Feb. 29 and runs for eight consecutive Wednesdays. Graduation will be Apr. 18. Classes are from 7 to 9 p.m.

The goals of the citizens academy are to:

  • To provide greater awareness and understanding between the  department and the citizens it serves.
  • To inform participants with an understanding of the operations and resources of St. Louis County Police.
  • To provide insight into the divisions and functions of the department.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Citizens Academy begins March 6 and ends May 22. Classes are on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. for the 12-week course. Those who complete the course will receive a certificate from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Classes will be at the Sheriff's Office in Hillsboro. Class size is limited to 30 students. There are no costs to attend the academy, however, pre-registration is required.

The purpose of the “Sheriff’s Citizens Academy” is to increase a better understanding between citizens and the Sheriff’s Office through education, according to to Sheriff Glenn Boyer.  Course topics include different aspects of police work, ranging from administrative functions, narcotics, investigations, tactical teams, firearms, and jail functions, traffic & road patrol, and K-9.
