Fenton Firefighter Steve Grimes Succumbs to Leukemia

Capt. Grimes served for 20 years in the Fenton Fire Protection District.

Captain Steve Grimes, 43, who served with the Fenton Fire Protection District for 20 years, died June 23, 2011, after battling leukemia.

Capt. Grimes began his service with the Affton Fire Protection District as a volunteer in 1989. In 1991 he began his 20-year career in the Fenton Fire Protection District. He was promoted to Captain in 2008.

“Everyone who meets Steve loves him,” said Paul Seemayer, a fellow Fenton firefighter and member of FOOLS, a national training organization for firefighters. FOOLS stands for Fraternal Order Of Leatherheads Society.

On Wednesday, friends and firefighters from departments all around South County and Jefferson County gathered at d Dooley's 026 Grill, in Fenton for a FOOLS fundraiser for Capt. Grimes and his family. News of his critical health situation was spreading throughout the crowd as the competitors remembered their colleague.

Capt. Grimes is survived by his wife, Jennifer; parents, John and Mary Grimes; a brother, Craig Grimes; and a sister, Nicole Grimes.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at the Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Rd. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, from Kutis Affton Chapel, with burial at Sunset Memorial Park, 10180 Gravois Rd., Affton.

Honor Guard and Casket Vigil will be by Tri-County Consortium members. The Fenton Fire Protection District has requested no fire apparatus attend the procession to the internment.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Backstoppers, P.O. Box 66927, St. Louis, 63166, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,Gateway Chapter, 77 Westport Plaza, Suite 101, Maryland Heights, 63146.

A fellowship luncheon at St. Paul Catholic Church, 15 Forest Knoll Drive, Fenton, will follow the interment.
