A Solution to Feeling Lost in the Library

If you haven't been to the library in awhile, it's definitely worth checking out.

I can usually spot them when they come in.

They either gaze around, not knowing where to start or where to go, or they just head towards the shelves hoping to find what they need.  Generally if I spot one, I’ll go up to them and ask, "Is there something I can help you find?" This is usually met with a sheepish look and a confession along the lines of  “I’ve never been here,” or “It’s been years since I’ve been in the library.”

It’s not even much of a surprise anymore when I hear it, but it still amazes me.  There are people who don’t know what an incredible resource they have in us - the Northwest Branch of the Jefferson County Library.

First of all, if you are one of those lost sheep, it’s okay!  It’s never too late to re-discover the library.  And for those who still think the library is just about books, hopefully this column will enlighten you.

Yes, the library offers the obvious books, movies and magazines for all ages. But what I hope to share with you over time is how much more there is and how much value Jefferson County Library brings to this community.

Did you know that if the library doesn’t have the item you want, we can try to obtain it from libraries across the nation?  How about if the family history you’re looking for is on microfilm in Salt Lake City - did you know that they will send it to our Genealogy Department for you? The library subscribes to databases offering everything from free magazine, newspaper and journal articles to collated lists of businesses within a given ZIP code, and this is just to mention a few.

Computer classes for beginners, job-seeking programs, monthly clubs for adults and teens and weekly story times and crafts for little kids - there is so much to be found at the library besides books - and that is why we hope to bring you these weekly articles.  And sure, we’ll talk about books, too!

More than anything, though, we want to use this space to remind you, the community, what the library offers and so you can let us know what you think!  After all, even if you haven’t been here in years, the library is yours.
