Local Presidential Connections and a Good Day for Kite Flying

Things you need to know about today.

President's Day: Schools, libraries, banks and government offices are closed. Stores are mostly open, many in the midst of their President's Day sales.

The Father of Our Country:  Although his birthday actually is Feb. 22, the third Monday in February has been designated as a federal holiday known as President's Day as a time to honor all past Presidents. George Washington, however, is the best known of all with his picture appearing on the $1 bill and hundreds of institutions around the country. There is a statue of Washington in Lafayette Park in St. Louis.

Washington was the first president of the United States of America. His first term as president was from 1789 to 1793 and his second from 1793 to 1797. Before he led leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in 1783. He's kind of a big deal.

Local Connections: Although there is nothing in Fenton and High Ridge named after George Washington and no claims that "Washington Slept Here," there are a couple of presidential connections, tenuous though they may be. There is a Clinton Drive and a Lincoln Terrace Court that bear the names of two U.S. Presidents.

Sunny and windy: The National Weather Service has predicted good weather today with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s. There will be a bit of wind, however, so if you head for Fenton City Park to launch a kite for the first time this year, you may want to make sure your kite string is reinforced.
