Peach Season is Here. Sorta.

Taking the kids to one of Eckert's pick-your-own orchards is practically a childhood rite of passage in St. Louis. The fruity fun starts in May when the strawberry patch opens up and runs through to December when you can cut your own Christmas tree. In between, the kids can run through a blackberry patch, see blueberries up close, pick juicy peaches and apples, and hunt down the perfect pumpkin.

The wonky spring weather must be playing havoc with Eckert's fruit season this year! July should be prime peach weather, but the orchards had to shut down after just a few weeks of early peaches.

They are expecting to be ready for action later in July when new varieties become ripe. If you're in a hurry, you can get Eckert's peaches from their country store in Belleville, or at the Sappington farm market.

But believe me, it will be worth the wait! For many kids, a trip to Eckert's is the only time they'll see where fruit (and veggies) really came from. If you go to Eckert's remember to bring your hat, sunblock and an appetite. After hitting the fields there's a kiddy corral to goof around on, a restaurant for some down home cooking and a pretty awesome custard stand. (The apple pie custard is my favorite!)
