Catching fireflies is a summer rite of passage for children, but what do you do when the fireflies aren't showing up in your backyard? You could stumble around in a park at dusk, or you can do what we did.

My 6 year-old and I sat down and crafted up collection of Faux Firefly catchers, using different techniques to get the perfect mix of ease, fun and real firefly action.
We tested glow in the dark pony beads, glow in the dark paint and battery operated lights. We recycled peanut butter, cheese and pasta jars. We twisted pipe cleaners and dangled beads from string, looking for just the perfect "buggy" effect.
