5 Ways to Avoid a Boring Spring Break

Never let the kids say those dreaded words, "Mom, I'm bored!"

Never let the kids say those dreaded words, "Mom, I'm bored!"

Rockwood and most of the other schools around the area are on Spring Break next week. If you weren't lucky enough to book a trip to the ocean this week, here's a few ideas for spending a little "staycation" time under the Arch.

1) Rev Their Engines: What kid wouldn't want to spend part of Spring Break racing around a mini track? We have several good options for go-carts in the area: Pole Position Raceway in Crestwood (new), Nascar Speed Park at the Mills (indoor and outdoor), Swing-A-Round Fun Town in Fenton and St. Charles (outdoors) and St. Louis Incredible Pizza Company on South Lindbergh (indoors).

2) Run Them Ragged: Tired of the kids playing video games all day? The weather this spring break should be good enough for a nice hike. Take the kids to Powder Valley in Kirkwood for paved trail through the woods toped with a trip to the Nature Center or head over to Laumeier Scupture Park in Sunset Hills for a mix of hiking and art. Both places are free.

3) Play Tourist: Take the kids downtown for some hometown tourist fun. Depending on the amount of energy and money you have at your disposale, you can hit the City Museum, the Arch and CityGarden. I doubt you can hit all three in one day--CityGarden at least is free.

4) Get Artsy: Since we're trying to avoid boredom, I won't suggest the Art Museum, which should be saved for kids who will truely appreciate it. No, if you've run out of home art projects try a trip to Yucandu art studio in Webster or Glazed and Confused paint your own pottery in South County. Both welcome walk-ins and have projects easy for kids.

5) Mix in Science: Slip a little learning into their Spring Break with a fun and educational trip to the or the Science Center in Forest Park.
