Savers Secondhand Retailer Heads to St. Louis

Crestwood gets one of Savers' first two stores in the region in the former Barnes & Noble space on Watson Road.

Savers, a for-profit retailer of secondhand clothing and home goods, is making its first strides into the region with a new store in Crestwood. The Board of Aldermen approved a request for the store to occupy the former , 9618 Watson Rd., last week.

Savers will retain a 25,000-square-foot sales space, the Crestwood city clerk's office confirmed.

While the store accepts donations from the general public, similar to a Salvation Army or Goodwill outlet, Savers aims to benefit non-profit organizations in the process. Agencies who pair with Savers collect community donations on the store’s behalf, and the store pays the non-profits based on the total amount of items donated. (Read more about the process on the store's website.)

Donations can generate as much as $70,000 annually per store for partnering charities, a representative for Savers told the city's planning and zoning commission members last month.

The store has not chosen which local charities it would pair with, according to city documents.

The store would employ roughly 60 full- and part-time staff, according to city documents. The addition to Crestwood is part of a national expansion for the company, who said they hope to open 30 new locations within the next year. A location is also proposed for Ellisville.
