The long-awaited opening of a Walmart Supercenter at High Ridge Commons is now on the calendar.

Susan Tuggle, president of the Northwest Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, reported that Walmart has scheduled a preview night May 10 where employees will have a first peek at the new High Ridge Commons Walmart Supercenter, located at High Ridge Boulevard and Highway 30. It will be followed at 7:30 a.m. the next morning with a flag ceremony and a ribbon-cutting event, followed by the official opening of the store at 8 a.m. Several Jefferson County dignitaries are expected to be on hand to say a few words and welcome the new store to the area.

The Walmart opening has been eagerly anticipated by shoppers and officials alike. Currently, those who wish to shop at Walmart have to drive to the Supercenter at Gravois Bluffs, in Fenton, just a few miles east on Highway 30. But more than convenience, the store opening means that sales taxes collected at the High Ridge Commons Walmart will stay in Jefferson County, bringing a potential boost to the local economy.

Jefferson County Councilman Charles Groeteke made the point at a ground-breaking ceremony last September. "People often drive to St. Louis County to purchase basic necessities. Jefferson County is a first class county and deserves to have first class shopping opportunities."

The residential portion of the High Ridge Commons development will consist of 20 acres of single family homes.

There will be more details about the opening of the High Ridge Commons Walmart in the days to come. We'll pass them along on Patch as they become available.
