Preventing Care Giver Burnout

Caring for our elderly loved ones can become overwhelming very quickly. This blog will offer insight into preventing care giver burnout.

Most people can look back fondly on their childhood days, knowing that their parents would take care of their every need.  They grow up and marry their soulmate, finding comfort and security in that relationship.  The passage of time, however, can lead to a significant shift in a relationship with a spouse or parent.  At some point, most people will become a caregiver for their loved ones.  The pressure and stress related to that new role is often overwhelming.

Caregiver burnout  is defined as a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude -- from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned.  The symptoms of caregiver burnout can include withdrawal from loved ones, loss of interest in normal activities, feeling sad or helpless, changes in appetite and sleep patterns and irritability.

Caregivers often feel confused by their new relationship with a spouse or parent and set unrealistic expectations for themself in that new role. They often try to handle the entire responsibility for care giving until they reach a point of exhaustion.  They often believe that the only options include allowing strangers into their home or placing their loved one in a nursing home.
