The Dangers of Vitamin D Deficiency In Seniors

Does your senior loved one get enough Vitamin D?  According to WebMD, approximately 40-75% of Americans have a Vitamin D deficiency (source).  This deficiency can be detrimental to all ages, but for our senior loved ones, it can be especially challenging.

If you are a caregiver for a senior, it may be time to ask their doctor about Vitamin D supplements for a variety of reasons.  These include the following:

·         The risk of falling can be greatly reduced through the combination of exercise and Vitamin D supplementation (source).

·         Seniors with higher levels of Vitamin D were able to perform higher cognitively than their counterparts with lower levels of the vitamin (source).

·         Vitamin D helps bones absorb calcium, which makes them stronger and less likely to fracture or break.

·         Vitamin D deficiencies can put women at higher risk for breast cancer (source).

The sun is a source of Vitamin D but must be balanced with the risk of skin cancer.  Few foods provide a natural source of Vitamin D, so it is important to consider supplementation.  As a caregiver, you should consider talking to your senior loved one’s doctor about Vitamin D levels and/or need for supplementation.
