Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Seniors

Does your senior loved one struggle to meet their nutritional needs? This insightful article can help with this common issue among the senior population.

As our loved ones age, they often struggle with loss of appetite for many reasons, including illness, memory loss and side effects of medication.  This loss of appetite can lead to weight loss and other health concerns.  As we find ourselves in the role of care giving, we need to prepare meals and encourage our elderly loved ones to eat throughout the day.  This becomes difficult if our loved one is home alone while we work.

Adult Day Care is a great option for seniors who are struggling to meet their nutritional needs during the day.  A good facility will provide nutritious snacks and a healthy lunch every day.  The social atmosphere of an adult day care allows seniors to sit with friends as they eat, encouraging conversation and preventing loneliness.

In addition to the clean environment provided by an adult day care facility, the nursing staff should oversee menu planning and can help families with meal planning to meet nutritional requirements created due to medical problems, such as diabetes.  Staff monitor food intake, so that we can ensure that our seniors get the nutrition they need during the day.
