Circulation Problems In Seniors

As our senior loved ones age, they often face a variety of health issues.  One of these health issues may be poor circulation.  Poor circulation can occur due to age, diet, lack of exercise, health conditions and certain medications.  Poor circulation can lead to blood clots, numbness in the extremities and brain “fog”.

Fortunately, there are many things that we as caregivers can do to help our senior loved ones with circulation problems:

·         Exercise:  keeping the body in motion will help with circulation.  This can be a challenge as our body ages.  A consultation with doctor or nurse can help evaluate your senior loved one for a safe regime of exercise.  A Walking Club with friends can be very motivating for seniors who struggle to stay active.

·         Diet:  it is essential for your senior loved one to drink plenty of water and eat nutritional meals throughout the day.  This will help the body function so it can maintain proper circulation.

·         Compression garments:  if your senior loved one has numbness and tingling in their hands and feet, consult with their doctor.  They may need a compression garment on their legs or arms to maintain circulation throughout their extremities.

A good adult day care center can help caregivers ensure that their senior loved one is following the proper steps to achieve proper circulation.  The nursing staff can evaluate circulation problems and recommend ways to improve them, specific to your senior loved one.  The center should engage your senior loved one in exercise on a daily basis and monitor nutrition during lunch and snacks.

Adult day care centers allow a client to live with a care giver and receive the care they need during the day while their caregiver works.  The cost is less than half of assisted living and less than one fourth of the price of nursing home care.  Payment options include Missouri Aged and Disable Waiver, long term care insurance, veteran’s benefits and private pay.
